Keeping Cats Cool in Summer 2025: Vet-Approved Tips & Warning Signs 🐱☀️

By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc

Summer heat can be tough on our feline friends. Unlike humans, cats can’t sweat all over their bodies — they only sweat through their paw pads, which isn’t enough to cool them down. This makes them more vulnerable to heat stress and even heatstroke during hot weather.

Thankfully, there are simple ways to keep your cat comfortable and safe when temperatures rise. Here are 9 proven ways to help your cat stay cool in the summer — plus the warning signs of overheating every cat parent should know.

1. 💧 Fresh, Cool Water at All Times

Hydration is key! Make sure your cat has access to fresh, cool water 24/7.

  • Add ice cubes to their water bowl for longer-lasting coolness.

  • Provide two bowls (one with ice, one without) so your cat can choose.

  • Wash and refill bowls daily to prevent bacteria buildup.

👉 Pro tip: Some cats drink more from fountains since they love moving water.

2. 🌳 Create Shady Spots

Cats instinctively seek cooler, shaded areas.

  • Indoors: close blinds, curtains, or use cooling shades to block direct sunlight.

  • Outdoors: set up shaded zones under trees, umbrellas, or covered patios if your cat spends time outside.

3. 🌬️ Improve Air Circulation

Good airflow helps prevent overheating.

  • Use fans or air conditioning to keep the room cooler.

  • Always ensure your cat can’t touch or climb into fans to avoid accidents.

  • Leave doors slightly open so your cat can move to cooler spaces.

4. ❄️ Offer Cool Surfaces

Cats often lie on cool tiles or hardwood floors when it’s hot.

  • Place a damp towel or cooling mat on the floor.

  • Let them access tiled areas like bathrooms or kitchens.

5. ✂️ Groom Regularly

Excess fur holds in heat.

  • Brush your cat often to remove loose hair.

  • For long-haired cats, consider a professional groomer for trimming (but never shave too close — fur also protects from sunburn).

6. 🧴 Try a Damp Cloth

Some cats enjoy a gentle wipe-down.

  • Use a cool, damp washcloth on their head, neck, and paws.

  • Don’t force it if your cat doesn’t like water — comfort comes first.

7. 🕛 Avoid Midday Heat

The hottest hours are usually 11 am to 4 pm.

  • Keep your cat indoors during peak heat.

  • If they enjoy outdoor time, encourage mornings and evenings instead.

8. 🍗 Hydrating Snacks

Food can help with hydration too.

  • Offer wet cat food (it contains more water than kibble).

  • Make DIY cat-friendly popsicles using tuna water or low-sodium chicken broth.

9. 🚨 Watch for Signs of Overheating

Even with precautions, cats can overheat. Recognize the warning signs of heatstroke:

  • Excessive panting or breathing difficulties

  • Rapid heart rate

  • Drooling or foamy saliva

  • Weakness, lethargy, or collapse

  • Seizures or tremors

  • Dark red or bright gums/tongue

  • Very high body temperature

  • Loss of consciousness

⚠️ If you see any of these signs, contact your vet immediately. Heatstroke is life-threatening and requires urgent care.

🐾 Final Thoughts

Every cat is unique. Some love lounging on cool tiles, while others prefer cozy shaded beds. The key is to provide options and keep an eye on their behavior. By ensuring fresh water, cool spaces, and regular monitoring, you can help your cat stay safe and comfortable all summer long.
