Fix Kitten Sleep Problems: Vet-Approved 2025 Solutions ๐Ÿพ

By Dr.โ€ฏDuncanโ€ฏHouston BVSc

If youโ€™re not sleeping because your kitten isnโ€™t sleeping โ€” youโ€™re not alone. ๐Ÿพ Kittens are cute chaos by day and, sometimes, tiny insomniacs by night. But donโ€™t worry โ€” most sleep struggles are easy to fix with the right setup, routine, and expectations.

This guide breaks down the most common kitten sleep mistakes new cat parents make โ€” and how to create a cozy, vet-approved bedtime your kitten will love.

โŒ Mistake #1: No Dedicated Bed or Sleep Zone

New kitten parents often assume their kitten will โ€œjust sleep anywhere.โ€ But without a defined bed, kittens:ย

  • May feel insecure or overstimulatedย
  • Switch spots constantlyย
  • Wake up crying for comfort or warmth

โœ… Fix: Create a quiet, cozy sleep area using a warm, enclosed bed like the ย  Donut Bed or ย  Little House.

โŒ Mistake #2: Letting Them Nap All Day (Unscheduled)

Kittens naturally nap a lot โ€” but if they sleep too long during the day, theyโ€™ll stay up at night. ๐Ÿ˜ต๐Ÿ’ซ

โœ… Fix: Build a play โ†’ meal โ†’ bed routine in the evening. ย  Simulate โ€œhunt, eat, sleepโ€ using a wand toy + final meal before lights out.

โŒ Mistake #3: No Warmth Support

Kittens canโ€™t regulate their body temperature well. Cold kittens cry, fidget, and can't settle.

โœ… Fix: Add a microwavable heat disc under the cushion or use a ย  3-in-1 Cube in cave mode to trap body heat.

Never use electric heat pads with kittens. Stick to passive, wrapped warmth sources.

โŒ Mistake #4: Reinforcing Midnight Meowing

Itโ€™s tempting to pick up your crying kitten at 2am โ€” but responding every time can teach them that crying = reward.

โœ… Fix: ย ย

  • Place their bed or crate in your room, near your bedย
  • Use calming scent (Feliway or your shirt)ย
  • Gently soothe but donโ€™t pick up unless necessary

โŒ Mistake #5: Too Much Freedom, Too Soon

Giving a tiny kitten free rein of the house overnight = overstimulation, wandering, accidents, or anxiety.

โœ… Fix: Create a safe โ€œsleep zoneโ€ using:

  • Crate + bed setup (see crate training article)ย
  • Enclosed corner with bed, litter, and blanket
