Why Do Cats Love Catnip? Feline Fun Explained 2025 🐱🌿

By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc

Catnip, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, is a member of the mint family that contains a chemical compound called nepetalactone—the ingredient that drives cats wild! When exposed to catnip, cats may exhibit behaviors like rolling, rubbing, purring, leaping, and even drooling.

How Catnip Affects Cats

Catnip triggers receptors in a cat’s brain that respond similarly to feline pheromones, producing a euphoric, “high-like” sensation. Not every cat reacts to catnip—sensitivity is hereditary, and around 70–80% of cats show a response.

The effects usually last about 10 minutes, after which cats become temporarily immune for roughly 30 minutes. The reaction is harmless, but it’s best enjoyed in moderation.

How to Use Catnip

1. Toys

Many cat toys are stuffed with dried catnip to encourage play. Refillable toys allow you to add fresh catnip when the scent fades.

2. Training Aid

Use catnip to make desirable items more appealing. For example, rubbing catnip on a scratching post can help redirect your cat from furniture.

3. Sprays

Catnip sprays can be applied to toys, bedding, or scratching posts to attract your cat’s attention.

4. Growing Catnip

If you have space, consider planting catnip outdoors. It’s easy to grow, and fresh leaves can be harvested.

Note: Other neighborhood cats may be drawn to your yard!

5. Stress Relief

Catnip can help reduce stress and anxiety in cats. The euphoric effect can calm them in new or stressful environments.

Safety Tips

While generally safe, catnip should be used in moderation:

  • Overexposure can cause mild gastrointestinal upset.

  • Excessive use may diminish responsiveness over time.

  • A small number of cats may become aggressive when exposed.

If your cat hasn’t tried catnip before, introduce it slowly and monitor their behavior.

Catnip can be a fun, safe, and enriching treat for most cats. Whether used in toys, sprays, or grown fresh at home, it offers a delightful way to encourage play, exercise, and relaxation for your feline friend.
