Vet’s 2025 Guide: How to Keep Your Kitten Warm at Night Safely 🐱🧣
By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc
Kittens don’t just love warmth — they need it. Until about 8–12 weeks old, kittens can’t regulate their own body temperature efficiently, which means cold nighttime air can lead to stress, poor sleep, or even illness.
But overheating is just as risky. So how do you strike the perfect balance?
This guide explains how to keep your kitten warm, safe, and comfy all night long — no sweat (literally).
🌡️ Ideal Temperature for Sleeping Kittens
- Newborn–4 weeks: 85–90°F (29–32°C)
- 5–8 weeks: 80°F (26–28°C)
- 8+ weeks: Room temp (68–75°F) + insulation is typically fine[1]
If you’re shivering, your kitten probably is too. Keep them warm with layered bedding and safe heat sources.
🛏️ Bed + Warmth = The Winning Combo
✅ Recommended Purrz Beds for Warmth
- 🧺 Donut Bed – plush, round, and heat-trapping
- 🏠 Little House Felt Bed – enclosed, cozy, and insulated
- 🔁 3-in-1 Cube Cave – fold into an insulated cave mode
🔌 Heat Support Tips (Safely!)
- Use a microwavable warming disc under the bed’s cushion
- Or a vet-approved heating pad with thermostat
-
Always wrap the heat source in a towel or under a thick fleece layer
- NEVER place the heat directly under your kitten
Place beds in corners, away from drafts, doors, or cold tile.
❄️ Signs Your Kitten Is Too Cold
- 🐾 Curling tightly, shaking, or burrowing into corners
- 🥶 Cold ears or paw pads
- 😴 Sleeping more than usual or refusing to move
⚠️ If your kitten is listless, unresponsive, or limp — warm them gradually and contact your vet immediately[2].
💬 From Dr. Duncan Houston
“Kittens aren’t just comforted by warmth — they require it. But overheating can be just as dangerous as cold. Felt caves, layered fleece, and heat sources set on low are ideal for overnight rest.”
