Transition Your Cat’s Bed From Kitten to Adult Without Stress 🐱🛏️
By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc
They used to curl up perfectly in that donut bed. Now… their tail hangs off the edge, and they’ve started sleeping on the floor instead. 😿
Time for an upgrade. But cats don’t always love change — even when it’s for the better. This guide explains how to transition your cat from a kitten bed to an adult bed without losing their trust (or sleep routine).
📏 When Is It Time to Upgrade?
- 🐾 Cat is longer than the bed (tail, limbs, or head spill over)
- 😾 They’ve stopped using it — choosing hard floors or other pets’ beds
- 🧼 The old bed is too worn, too soft, or smells “off”
🧠 Most cats are ready to transition between 6–12 months old, depending on breed and size.
✅ How to Introduce a New Bed
1. Place the New Bed in the Same Spot
- Replace their old bed with the new one — don’t move it across the house
- Let them “discover” it naturally
2. Use Familiar Scent
- Transfer a blanket, fleece, or plush toy from their old bed
- Rub your hands or a clean sock on their old bed, then rub the new one
3. Choose a Bed That Matches Their Sleep Style
- 🛋️ XL Felt Pad – for cats that stretch out
- 🔁 3-in-1 Cube – for cats who curl, stretch, or play
- 🏠 Felt Houses – for cats who love enclosed or elevated naps
4. Give It a Week
- Don’t toss the old bed immediately — leave it nearby for a few days
- Reward them when they investigate or nap on the new bed (treats or soft praise)
⚠️ Mistakes to Avoid
- Forcing your cat onto the new bed — let them choose
- Changing bed + location at the same time
- Using a totally different material (from warm felt to slippery fabric, etc.)
💡 Tip: Stick with felt beds or similar textures they already know and trust.
💬 From Dr. Duncan Houston
“Cats value familiarity more than novelty. The key to upgrading their bed is making it feel like a bigger, better version of something they already trust — not a complete replacement of their comfort zone.”
