How it works

Most scratchers are something a cat stands next to.

Beside the tunnel is an oval scratcher lounge in the same cardboard, with a dip in the middle.

It arrives flat and one person builds it without tools; the end panels are the PURRZ™ cat, in black or wood grain, and the white tunnel body slots between them.
Size guide
One or two cats; about 70 x 45 cm of floor, plus the lounge
60 x 34 x 39.5 cm
Measure the floor first. The tunnel wants about 70 by 45 cm and the lounge another 50 by 36 cm beside it, and both need to stay where she can see them. Against a wall with both ends open is the usual spot; in a hallway is better still.
One cat or two: a tunnel is the rare piece two cats use at once, from opposite ends, without either owning it. The lounge is one cat's bed; the rule of one resting place per cat plus one still stands.
Kittens and seniors: a kitten learns tunnel games faster than anything else you can buy her, and a ball rolled through it is a game you can play from the sofa. An older cat wants the lounge more than the tunnel; keep it on a floor her paws grip.

How to

In the room she scratches in, with both ends of the tunnel clear. Take the scratcher lounge out of the tunnel before she uses it: it ships packed inside. Let her supervise; the cardboard smell does the introduction.

A step from the end she comes out of. She scratches, walks out and lies down without crossing the room.

From the sofa, along the floor, in one end and out the other. Stop when she stops looking; leave the balls in the tunnel.

Loose shreds are the product working. Vacuum them; do not glue or tape anything.

Double-sided tape or a throw over the old spot while the tunnel gets the habit. Then the tape comes off.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
Cardboard scratchers shed, and shredding is normal. A cat who eats the shreds rather than leaving them, or unpicks and swallows the wool from the balls, should have that part taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet; eating non-food things has causes. The balls are small enough to end up under furniture, not small enough to swallow whole, but a chewed one comes apart, so retire a ball that is unravelling. Cardboard and water do not mix: keep it away from the water bowl and the door she comes in wet through. Scratching that starts suddenly in a new place, a cat who scratches far more than she did, or one who has stopped, is a vet visit before it is a shopping trip; this is not a treatment for a change in behaviour. Declawing is an amputation and is not a treatment for scratching either. When in doubt, ask your vet.
Why I designed it
A cat scratches the sofa because it is the biggest, most stable thing in the room and everyone she loves sits on it.

I bought this for my cats — Rilke, Iris and Delphine — and they absolutely love it. All three have claimed it as their new favourite spot in the house. The design is adorable, the quality is great, and it’s become a multi-purpose hideaway/scratcher/resting spot.
Combining a scratching box with a two level relaxing place is just perfect for our fur baby. A new favourite spot (hide, scratch, relax). Corrugated cardboard is not only great for clawing but is also robust so still looks good. This is one of a few products we have bought and all of them are well loved by Charlie.
FAQ
The tunnel is 60 cm long and 34 cm wide inside and stands 39.5 cm high, so allow about 70 by 45 cm of floor for it and another 50 by 36 cm for the lounge beside it. It is the largest piece in the range short of the towers, which is the point: a target has to be bigger than the sofa arm to beat it.
It is the best piece in the range for two, because a tunnel is used from both ends at once and nobody owns it. One waits at the mouth while the other comes through, and the ball rolled in one end starts the game. The lounge is one cat's bed, so a two-cat house still wants a second resting place; the rule is one per cat plus one.
Yes. The tunnel is 34 cm wide and stands 39.5 cm high outside, so the headroom inside is a large cat walking upright. A cat who prefers to lie in the tunnel rather than run through it has found the other use for it, and a Maine Coon fits lying down.
Months of daily scratching; the walls are double corrugated (double-wall) board and the lounge is the same. Shreds on the floor are it working, not it failing. When the lounge is scratched through it goes in the recycling, and the tunnel usually outlasts it. Keep it dry: cardboard and a wet cat coming in from the garden do not mix.
To roll through the tunnel: a tunnel with nothing coming through it is a box. Wool balls are quiet, they do not mark floors and a cat can carry one. They are too big to swallow whole, but a chewed one unravels, so retire a ball that is coming apart and take them away from a cat who eats the wool rather than batting it.
Not on its own, and please do not buy it for that. A cat who suddenly scratches far more, or in new places, is usually telling you something has changed: pain, a new cat or person, a change in the house. That is a vet visit first, then a better target on the spot she uses. Declawing is an amputation and is not a treatment for scratching.
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat ignoring the tunnel in week one usually wants a ball rolled through it first; start from the sofa and stop before she does.
