Why this range exists

“The tag is for the day someone else finds her. The tracker is for the day you do.”

Lost cats are found close to home, silent, under something, and the difference between a cat home by dinner and a cat gone for weeks is whether anyone knew which garden to look in. The tag covers the first case: a neighbour finds her, scans it with the phone in their pocket, and you have a message before you knew she was out. It costs a few grams and nothing a year, so every cat wears one, including the one who never goes out. The tracker covers the second case, for a cat over 4 kg who goes out: her position on your phone from its own connection, and the radar and the collar tone for the last few metres under a deck. I sell it with the weight and the plan price in plain sight, because a tracker on the wrong cat, or a plan you did not know about, is how a good idea becomes a returned parcel. And every one of them goes on a breakaway collar. Gary wears the Sardines tag every day and the tracker on his harness walks.

  • I’ve been worried about my cat wandering too far, but this GPS tracker has been a total game-changer. The setup was quick, and the app is very easy to use. I can see exactly where my cat is at any time, which has taken all the stress out of letting them roam. Highly recommended for any cat owner!

Questions cat owners ask about tags and trackers

Short answers from the vet who designs the range. Health questions go to your own vet, or a certified vet in the Ask A Vet app.

Does the tag need an app or a subscription?

No. The finder needs nothing but a phone: the camera reads the QR code, or a tap reads the NFC chip, and a page opens with the details you chose to share, and you get an alert at the same moment. You set the profile up once in the Ask A Vet app when the tag arrives, and it stays free for life; if you move or change your number, you edit it in the app rather than buying a new tag. The tag has no battery and nothing to charge.

Does the tracker need a subscription, and what does it cost?

Yes, for the tracking. The QR pet ID on the tracker's screen is free for life; the live location, the zones, the activity and the sleep need a Tracker Plan, monthly or for less paid yearly, or Premium, which covers two pets and adds AI Vet Chat, two certified vet chats a month and health tracking. The app asks you to choose when you set the tracker up and shows the price before anything is charged. The prices are on askavet.com.

Is the tracker too heavy for my cat?

For a small one, yes. It is 68 g with its strap and 57 x 45 x 22 mm, and the maker rates it for cats over 4 kg; this store holds to that, so weigh her before you buy. A cat under 4 kg wears the Cat Smart ID Tag, which is a few grams and needs no battery. Over 4 kg, fit the tracker to a breakaway collar, check the skin under it each time you charge it, and take it off a cat who is still scratching at it after a few days.

Will the tracker work where I live, and does my phone need to be near her?

It needs GPS reception and mobile coverage where she is, through partner networks, so check the country list on askavet.com before you buy. Your phone does not need to be anywhere near her; the tracker sends its own position. When reception is weak the app shows the last reported position and how accurate it was, and catches up when she is back in coverage. Indoors, a power-saving zone on your home Wi-Fi stops it hunting for satellites, which is where most of the battery goes.

Tag, microchip or tracker: which does she need?

All three do different things. The microchip is under her skin and is read at a vet clinic or a shelter, so keep the registry current. The tag is read by anyone with a phone in the first hour she is missing, which is why every cat wears one, indoor cats included. The tracker is for you to find her yourself, and it is for cats over 4 kg who go out. An indoor cat needs the chip and the tag; an outdoor cat over 4 kg needs all three, which is what the Track & Scan Bundle is for.

What collar should either one go on, and what if it arrives faulty?

A breakaway collar, for both: one that snaps open under load, with two fingers' room under it, checked weekly. The tag clips to the D-ring, or the Slide-On threads onto the strap; the tracker's silicone strap goes round the collar with the screen out, under her chin or to one side. If anything arrives faulty, damaged or wrong, email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; it is covered, and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours.
