As cats age, their needs change — especially when it comes to comfort and mobility. Older cats often experience joint stiffness, arthritis, and reduced mobility, making a supportive bed one of the most important products in your home.
At PURRZ, we design and recommend cat beds that help support aging joints, reduce pain, and improve sleep quality. Here’s how to choose the right bed for your senior cat — and why it makes such a difference.
Why Senior Cats Need Specialized Beds
Cats over the age of 8 are considered seniors, and many begin to develop osteoarthritis, a condition that causes joint inflammation and pain. You may notice your older cat:
- Jumping less or avoiding high surfaces
- Sleeping more (but less comfortably)
- Becoming less playful or more grumpy
Providing a comfortable, joint-supportive cat bed can help alleviate this discomfort and improve your cat’s quality of life.
Recommended Cat Beds for Senior Cats
1. 3-In-1 Cave
Recommended for: Older cats with changing sleep habits
- Use as a closed cave, an open bed, or a seat depending on how your cat feels that day
- Soft foam structure cushions the body while providing warmth
- Low entry height makes it easy for cats with limited mobility
2. Flat Felt Pad
Recommended for: Cats who sprawl or need a soft surface on hard floors
- Open design is ideal for arthritic cats who don’t like to be enclosed
- Easy to step onto, with zero walls or edges
- Pairs well with heated mats or orthopedic toppers
3. Felt Cave
Recommended for: Shy, elderly cats who want warmth and privacy
- Dome design traps warmth for sore joints
- Firm, stable base supports weight evenly
- Interior large enough for long or curled sleeping positions
All of our beds are approved by our in-house vet, Dr Duncan Houston, and tested for both comfort and safety.
Vet Tip: How to Spot Arthritis in Cats
“Cats don’t limp the way dogs do — they hide their pain. Watch for subtle signs like hesitation to jump, stiffness after naps, or avoiding stairs. A better bed won't cure arthritis, but it can dramatically reduce daily pain.”

Other Essentials for Senior Cat Comfort
- Low-entry felt beds for easy access
- Calming felt caves for safe sleep
- Heated pads to help soothe sore joints
