  1. 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:03 All right, let's go through the dice. This is the High Roller. I really like this because it's a giant dice for your cat. You can actually play with it if you want.
  3. 0:13 Look, this does have a ball inside. It has a couple of little structural integrity bits inside, so it's not that easy to knock the ball around.
  4. 0:20 This is really good because it's really lightweight. You can play with your cat, roll it around. It's pretty big, actually.
  5. 0:25 It is quite fun and you can play games with it. That's the High Roller Dice.

How it works

Why the High Roller Dice works for a cat left alone all day

Illustrated brown and cream cat in a purple collar swiping a grey PURRZ™ High Roller Dice so it tips over onto one edge, a bell glinting through one of its holes

The whole toy moves

Most bell-ball boxes stay put and let the ball do the moving.

  • A proper swipe sends it tumblingThis one weighs about 170 grams, so a proper swipe sends the cube tumbling across the floor, ball rattling, and it comes to rest on a new face with new holes.
  • She chases the cubeShe chases the cube, works the ball through the nearest hole, and hits it again.
  • A hunt that movesA hunt that moves, not a puzzle that sits there.
Illustrated brown and cream cat reaching a paw into a hole on top of a grey PURRZ™ High Roller Dice, the bell ball inside showing through the centre hole of the five-hole face

Pips are paw holes

The six faces are cut like a dice, one hole on one face and up to six on another, so there is always an opening on top and one at floor level, and two cats can work opposite faces at once.

  • A paw and a forearmThe holes take a paw and a forearm.
  • The ball lives insideThe ball goes in before the last panel closes and lives inside; the pip holes take a paw, not the ball.
Illustrated man in a purple jumper kneeling to place a stack of flat grey PURRZ™ High Roller Dice felt panels in an open white drawer, a purple bell ball beside them and a brown and cream cat watching

Flat felt, slots together

Six dense polyester felt panels with tab joints, no tools, and it comes apart the same way for a wipe or a drawer.

  • Packs flat, posts as a presentIt packs flat to 34 by 24 by 4 centimetres and weighs about 170 grams, which is why it posts as a present and why a cat can move it.
  • Grey or Cream, like a diceGrey or Cream, and it looks like a dice, which is the joke.

Three rules for choosing

  • One per cat is the right number, because the cube ends up wherever the cat left it. Two cats can share one and work opposite faces; two cats with one each will still swap.

  • Kittens: from the point she is pouncing on things. If she can fit her head through the largest hole, the toy waits until she cannot, because a head that goes in can get stuck coming out. Adult cats reach in with a paw and a forearm.

  • Big cats and strong swipers move it further; a cube that keeps turning up under the couch is doing its job. Hard floors let it slide and let the bell carry; on thick carpet it stays put and plays like a box with holes.

How to

How to set it up so she actually plays with it

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper kneeling to hold the open-topped walls of a grey PURRZ™ High Roller Dice, its loose top panel and a purple bell ball on the floor and a brown and cream cat watching

    Slot it together

Five panels, then the ball, then the sixth. Tabs into slots, no tools, a minute at most.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper sitting cross-legged on a round cream rug as a brown and cream cat reaches a paw into a cream PURRZ™ High Roller Dice, a purple bell ball showing inside

Put it on the floor she uses

Hard floor is best: the cube slides and the bell carries. On thick carpet it stays put and becomes a box with holes, which still works.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper kneeling to roll a grey PURRZ™ High Roller Dice over onto one edge towards a watching brown and cream cat, a purple bell ball showing through a hole

Roll it once in front of her

One push so it rings and tumbles, then leave her to it. Most cats have a paw in a hole within the minute.

  • Illustrated brown and cream cat in a purple collar curled up asleep against the side of a grey PURRZ™ High Roller Dice

    Leave it out

It is a leave-out toy: no string, no feathers, nothing to come off. Look at the ball for cracks now and then.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper kneeling at an open white drawer with a cream PURRZ™ High Roller Dice in his hands and a grey one stored inside, a brown and cream cat watching

    Rotate it

A week on the floor, a fortnight in a drawer, back out. Novelty is most of what a solo toy sells, so keep some in reserve.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

This is a leave-out toy, and the simplest one in the range: no string, no feathers, nothing to unpick. Three things to watch. The ball is hollow plastic with a bell inside; if it cracks, the bell and the shards are small enough to swallow, so a cracked ball goes in the bin and a replacement goes in the cube. A cat who chews the felt rather than pawing it should lose the toy; some cats eat fabric, and felt in the gut is an obstruction, not a snack. And the largest hole: if a kitten can fit her head through it, she can get it stuck coming back out, so a small kitten plays with that face to the floor or waits a month. A cat who suddenly stops eating, vomits repeatedly or strains in the tray needs a vet the same day, not a new toy.

Why I designed it

A box with a bell in it is a toy. A box that rolls is a hunt.

Bell balls in boxes are the toys I suggest most for cats who are alone all day, because the ball keeps moving after the cat has stopped.

  • For the cat who gets boredThe dice is the one for the cat who gets bored of a box that sits still.
  • A real swipe sends it tumblingIt weighs about 170 grams, so a real swipe sends the whole cube tumbling with the ball rattling inside it.
  • Every face has holesAnd because every face has holes, wherever it lands there is a new way in.
  • She chases it, works the ballShe chases it, works the ball, hits it again.
  • Slots together in a minuteGrey or Cream, six felt panels, slots together in a minute.
  • Gary treats it like a footballGary treats it like a football, which was the idea.

What does a cat actually do with it?

Paws at the bell ball through the holes, which rings it and usually shoves the cube, which tumbles onto a new face with new holes and a different sound. She follows it, reaches in again, hits it again. It is built for a cat on her own, and it moves, which is what separates it from a box that sits in the corner all day.

Is it safe to leave out while I am at work?

Yes, and it is the simplest leave-out toy in the range: no string, no feathers, nothing to unpick. Watch two things. A cracked ball goes in the bin, because the bell inside is small enough to swallow. And a cat who chews the felt rather than pawing it loses the toy; some cats eat fabric, and felt in the gut is an obstruction, not a snack.

    Grey or Cream?

Same cube, same ball. Grey is charcoal felt and shows light fur less; Cream is a pale oat felt and shows dark fur less. Both are in stock and ship now. Pick the one that matches the floor it will live on, because the floor is where it will be, and usually under something.

    Can my kitten use it?

From the point she is pouncing on things, with one rule: if she can fit her head through the largest hole, wait. A head that goes in can get stuck coming back out, and a kitten will try. Turn that face to the floor, or give it a month. Adult cats reach in with a paw and a forearm and the head stays outside.

    Does the ball come out?

It goes in when you slot the last panel on and it is meant to stay in; the pip holes take a paw, not the ball. If it does come out, it is a bell ball on the floor, which is a different toy, not a problem.

How do I clean it, and will it last?

Brush or vacuum the fur off and wipe it with a damp cloth; it comes apart into six panels for a proper go. Assume it does not survive a washing machine. Dense felt takes a lot of pawing; a cat who is shredding it rather than playing wants a scratcher, and the felt will tell you which cat you have.

What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat who ignores it in week one usually wants it to move first: one push so it rings and rolls, on a hard floor, and give it a fortnight.
