How to Clean & Care for Your Felt Cat Cave 2025 Easy Guide 🧼

By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc

A felt cat cave is one of the coziest, safest places your cat can call home. But as with any beloved nap spot, it’s bound to get a little furry (and maybe a bit funky) over time. Don’t worry — cleaning your felt cat cave is simple, and with proper care, it’ll last for years of purrs and naps.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to clean your felt cat bed, what to avoid, and how to keep it looking and smelling its best.

🧼 Why Felt Needs Special Care

Our felt cat caves are made from natural wool blends — which are incredibly durable, breathable, and odor-resistant. But they’re also sensitive to heat, friction, and harsh detergents.

The golden rule: gentle and cold is key. Skip the washing machine — a little TLC goes a long way.

🐾 How to Clean Your Felt Cat Cave

1. Shake or Vacuum First

  • Take the cave outside and give it a gentle shake to remove loose hair and debris.
  • Use a vacuum with a brush or upholstery attachment to lift out embedded fur and dander.

2. Spot Clean with Cold Water

  • For small stains or dirt patches, gently blot the area with a damp cloth and cold water
  • If needed, add a drop of wool-safe soap (like a baby shampoo or wool detergent).
  • Avoid rubbing or wringing — this can cause felting or misshaping.

3. Deodorize Naturally

  • Sprinkle a little baking soda inside and let it sit for 30 minutes.
  • Shake out or vacuum to remove any lingering smells.

4. Reshape While Drying

  • Let the bed air dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area
  • Do not use a dryer or place in direct sunlight — heat can shrink or warp the shape.
  • While it dries, reshape the dome with your hands to keep that perfect cave shape.

🚫 What Not to Do

  • ❌ Do not machine wash or tumble dry
  • ❌ Avoid hot water or harsh chemicals
  • ❌ Don’t soak the entire bed unless absolutely necessary
  • ❌ No bleach, no stain removers

Remember: Wool is naturally antimicrobial and doesn’t need frequent washing. A little maintenance every few weeks is usually enough.

💬 Vet Tip: Clean Beds = Healthy Cats

“Cats spend a lot of time sleeping, and a clean, comfortable bed can reduce skin irritation, flea issues, and respiratory reactions in sensitive cats. Plus, a fresh-smelling bed means they’re more likely to keep using it.”
