Vet designed

Designed by emergency vet Dr Duncan Houston. Tested at home by Gary, a Ragdoll who bats a felt ball under the sofa and then sleeps on the pad as if nothing happened.

Why this bundle

  • Designed by Dr Duncan Houston
  • Tested by Gary
  • Felt balls, no clatter
  • Merino felt, suede base

How it works

Why silent balls and a felt square work for an indoor cat, and who should not have wool

Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt and blue jeans dozing in a cream armchair while a cat bats a yellow PURRZ™ merino felt ball across the charcoal PURRZ™ felt pad, three more felt balls beside it

Balls that roll without a sound, so the 5 am game happens

A felt ball rolls, wobbles and stops; it does not bounce, and it makes no noise on boards or tiles.

  • Play hardest at dawn and duskThat matters more than it sounds: cats play hardest at dawn and dusk, and the toy that wakes the house gets put away.
  • Eight in the boxEight in the box, so a few are out and the rest wait in the drawer for the day the first ones are under the fridge.
Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt typing at a desk with a monitor while a cat sleeps curled up on the charcoal PURRZ™ felt pad laid beside the keyboard, the PURRZ™ tag at its corner

A pad she decides is hers

Cats choose where they sleep by warmth, a little height and the feel under them.

  • On the spot she already likesA felt pad on the spot she already likes, the desk beside your keyboard, the sofa arm, the shelf in the sun, gives it a texture and an edge, and within a week it is hers.
  • The square next to the keyboardThat is how you get a cat off a keyboard: give her the square next to it.
Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt crouching to drop a fraying red PURRZ™ merino felt ball into a steel pedal bin while a cat sits beside her and looks up at her

Wool, and who should not have it

Merino felt is soft in the mouth, warm to lie on and quiet on the floor, so it is here instead of plastic.

  • Some cats eat woolIt is also wool, and some cats eat wool: kittens weaned early, some Siamese and Oriental cats, the cat who chews jumpers.
  • Swallowed wool can block a gutThat cat does not get this set, because swallowed wool can block a gut.
  • Comes apart, goes in the binA ball that starts to come apart goes in the bin.

Pad size

Medium or Large pad: where it goes, and what is in the box

  • Selected
    44 x 30 x 1 cm

    Medium

One cat: a desk, a shelf, a sofa arm

    44 x 30 x 1 cm

  • Selected

    Large

A bigger cat, or the floor

Three rules for choosing

  • The pad size is the only choice. Pick by where it will go: the Medium for a desk, a shelf or a sofa arm, the Large for the floor, the foot of a bed or a big cat who sleeps stretched out.

  • The balls are the same eight in either set: merino felt, assorted colours, no bell inside, larger than a cat can swallow whole. Put three out and keep five back; a felt ball that goes under the fridge is gone until you move the fridge.

  • Kittens and old cats take to both: a kitten bats a felt ball for the texture and an old cat can play with one without sprinting, and the pad is flat, so there is nothing to climb into. The cat who should not have this set is the one who eats fabric; the vet note says why.

How to

How to place the pad, play the balls, and look after felt

  • Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt standing at a desk with a monitor and keyboard, smoothing the charcoal PURRZ™ felt pad into place while a cat steps onto it from the far end of the desk

Put the pad where she already sits

The desk beside the keyboard, the sofa arm, the shelf that gets the sun. Not where you would like her to sit; where she sits now. A week there and it is hers.

  • Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt crouching on one knee with her hand open after rolling a red PURRZ™ merino felt ball across the floor, a cat crouched low beside her watching the ball roll past

Roll a ball past her, not at her

Along the floor, out of reach, and let it stop. A ball that runs away and stops is prey; a ball dropped in front of her is furniture.

  • Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt opening the top drawer of a white chest to show five PURRZ™ merino felt balls stored inside, while a cat sits on the floor beside the chest with three more felt balls

Three out, five in the drawer

Cats stop seeing a toy that is always there. Swap the three every week or so, and fish the lost ones out from under things when you move them.

  • Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt kneeling to brush the charcoal PURRZ™ felt pad with a wooden bristle brush, a lint roller and a folded cloth beside her, a cat sitting next to three PURRZ™ merino felt balls

Brush the pad, roll the balls

A lint roller for hair, a brush for the felt, a spot clean with cold water when it needs it. Pilled balls smooth out between your palms.

  • Illustrated woman in a teal checked shirt and blue jeans sitting cross-legged on the floor watching a cat bat a red PURRZ™ merino felt ball at the edge of the charcoal PURRZ™ felt pad

Watch how she plays with wool

Batting, carrying and pouncing are the game. Chewing the felt open or swallowing threads is not, and a cat who does that has the set taken away.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Some cats eat wool. It is common in kittens weaned early and in some Siamese and Oriental cats, and it shows as sucking or chewing on jumpers, blankets and fleece. A cat like that does not get felt toys or a felt pad, because swallowed wool and felt can block the gut, and a blocked gut is surgery. For any cat, a ball that is unravelling goes in the bin, and threads on the floor are picked up. The base of the pad is suede leather; a cat who licks or chews it loses the pad. Vomiting, straining, not eating or a swollen belly after a session with a toy that is now missing a piece is a same-day vet visit. And a cat who used to play and has stopped, or who sleeps far more than she did, is telling you something: that is a vet visit before it is a new toy.

Why these two together

Play she can do at midnight without waking the house. Then a spot that is hers.

Cats are built to hunt at dawn and dusk, which in a flat means a hard plastic ball across the floorboards at five in the morning, and a confiscated toy stops working.

  • Felt rolls without a soundFelt rolls without a sound, so the game gets played.
  • She picks the spotAfter a hunt a cat settles close by, and she picks the spot: warm, a little raised, with a texture under her.
  • A felt pad on the deskA felt pad on the desk or the sofa arm becomes that spot, which is the only way I know to keep a cat off a keyboard.
  • Gary bats, then sleepsGary bats a ball under the sofa and then sleeps on the pad like nothing happened.

    • Eight merino wool felt balls combined with lounge pad create activity rest balance perfectly. The bundle covers both energetic and restful cat needs simultaneously.

      RinkJune 2026
    • I work from home and plastic ball toys clattering across timber floors were driving me mad. The merino wool balls roll silently — my cat plays while I work and I hear nothing. Combined with the felt pad as her base of operations, it's a genuinely peaceful enrichment setup.

    What do I save?

Neither part is sold on its own on this store, so there is no figure of the parts' own to cross out. You are buying a felt pad and eight felt balls at the price above, with the Medium pad or the Large.

    How big is the pad?

It comes in two sizes. Pick by where the pad will go: the Medium for a desk, a shelf or a sofa arm, the Large for the floor or the foot of a bed.

Is wool safe for my cat?

For most cats, yes: felt is soft, quiet and warm, and batting and carrying one is what it is for. The exception is the cat who eats wool, which is common in kittens weaned early and in some Siamese and Oriental cats and shows as sucking or chewing on jumpers and blankets. A cat like that does not get this set, because swallowed wool can block the gut. For everyone else, bin a ball that starts to unravel.

Will she actually use the pad?

If it goes where she already sleeps, almost always, and if it goes where you would like her to sleep, almost never. Put it on the desk beside the keyboard, the sofa arm, the shelf in the sun, wherever she is now, and leave it a week. A little warmth and a texture under her are what a cat chooses a spot by, and a felt square on her spot becomes the spot.

Are the balls really quiet, and do they have bells?

No bell, and yes, quiet: felt rolls, wobbles and stops on boards or tiles without the clatter a plastic ball makes, which is the point for a cat who plays at five in the morning. They do not bounce, so the game is a roll and a chase, not a ricochet. They also disappear under fridges, which is why there are eight.

    How do I clean it?

The pad: a lint roller for hair, a brush for the felt, a spot clean with cold water when it needs it, dried flat. Do not machine wash it; the top is wool felt and the base is suede leather, and neither likes a machine. The balls: brush them, and roll a pilled one between your palms. Felt pills with use, and a pilled ball is a used ball, not a worn-out one.

What if it arrives damaged, or she ignores it?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat ignoring the pad in week one is normal if it is in the wrong place: move it to where she sleeps now. A cat ignoring the balls wants one rolled past her, not left in a pile.
