How it works

Some cats scratch upward and some drag their claws along the floor, and the floor scratchers are the ones ruining the rug.

Round the outside of the felt wall is a slot with balls in it.

The felt floor has three tabs; the wall panels fit onto them in sequence and close with hook-and-loop through the side holes.
Size guide
About 610 gOne cat curled; every cat to scratch
Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 35 cm she curls inside the wall with her back against it; a bigger cat scratches it and sleeps half over the rim. Every cat fits to scratch, because the pad is the whole floor.
Put it flat on the floor she scratches now, the rug corner or the doormat, not on a rug that slides. It is light enough to move, so it can follow her from the living room to the bedroom.
Kittens and seniors: the wall is 11 cm, a step rather than a climb, so an arthritic cat gets in without thinking about it. A senior who has stopped scratching altogether is a vet check before a new scratcher.

How to

Wall panels onto the floor tabs, hook-and-loop closed through the side holes, pad in. Let her supervise; the cardboard smell is the introduction.

On the rug corner or the doormat she scratches, flat, not on a mat that slides. It replaces the spot, so it goes on the spot.

Drag a wand across the pad so her claws catch the ridges once. Most cats take it from there.

Loose shreds are the product working. Brush them off; do not glue or tape anything.

Vacuum the felt, brush the pad, check the balls are all in the track, and drop the pad back in.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
Cardboard scratchers shed, and shredding is normal. A cat who eats the shreds or the felt fluff rather than leaving them should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet; eating non-food things has causes. The balls in the track are small: check they are all there when you clean, and if one is missing and you cannot find it, mention that too. The hook-and-loop fixings are not for chewing. Scratching that starts suddenly in a new place, a cat who scratches far more than she did, or a cat who always scratched and has stopped, is a vet visit before it is a shopping trip; a scratcher is not a treatment for a change in behaviour. Declawing is an amputation and is not a treatment for scratching either. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.
Why I designed it
Watch what a cat does after a good scratch: she does not walk off, she settles a few steps away, often on the thing she has just scratched. So the pad and the bed are one piece. A corrugated cardboard oval to drag her claws through, a low felt wall to curl against with her back covered, and balls in a track round the outside for the paw that is still looking for something to do. It is 11 cm high, so an old cat steps in rather than climbs. Gary scratches it, turns twice and goes to sleep on the shreds.

FAQ
Both, in that order of use. The floor is a corrugated cardboard pad she drags her claws through; the low felt wall round it turns the same oval into a bed she curls in afterwards with her back covered. Cats settle near where they have just scratched, so putting the two in one piece is not a gimmick, it is where she was going to lie down anyway.
It is 43 cm long, about 34 cm wide and 11 cm high. Measure your cat curled up, nose to tail base: under about 35 cm she fits inside the wall to sleep. A bigger cat scratches it just the same, because the pad is the whole floor, and sleeps half over the rim, which the cats in the photographs are doing quite happily.
It lifts out, so it can be replaced, but a replacement pad is not sold on its own yet. The pad wears through over months of daily scratching; when it is done, the felt surround is still good, and the page will say so the day a refill exists. Until then, brush the shreds off and turn the pad over.
They sit in a slot round the outside of the felt wall and roll when a paw goes past: a slow game for the cat who has finished scratching and is lying down. They are held in the track, but they are small, so check they are all there when you lift the pad out to clean, and tell your vet if one has gone missing and she has been unwell.
Both. A kitten learns flat scratching on cardboard fast, and the balls keep her there. For an older cat the 11 cm wall is a step, not a climb, and a flat scratch asks less of stiff shoulders than a post does. A senior who has stopped scratching altogether, or scratches and then limps, is worth a vet check before a new scratcher; that is often arthritis.
Not on its own, and please do not buy it for that. A cat who suddenly scratches far more, or in new places, is usually telling you something has changed: pain, a new cat or person, a change in the house. That is a vet visit first, then a scratcher on the spot she uses. Declawing is an amputation and is not a treatment for scratching.
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat ignoring it in week one usually means it is in the wrong place: move it onto the spot she scratches now and drag a wand across the pad once.
