- 0:00 Too many of the microchips I scan lead to an old number. Moved house, new phone, split up, and the registry has the details from the day she was chipped. And a finder in the street cannot read a chip at all.
- 0:10 This tag, anyone can read. Point a phone camera at the code, or tap it, and her profile opens in the browser. No app for the finder, nothing to sign up for: your numbers, her name, the notes you chose, and a button that says she is found.
- 0:22 You get the alert the moment it is scanned. And when your number changes, you change it in the app in seconds, and the tag on her collar is up to date the same moment. No battery, no subscription, ever.
- 0:34 It goes on a breakaway collar and nothing else, because a cat collar has to open if it catches. Two fingers flat underneath, checked weekly. And the tag is on top of her microchip, not instead of it.
- 0:46 If she never goes out, she is the one this is for. The window in a heatwave, the tradie who left the door, the move. An indoor cat out for the first time hides, and the person who finds her a week later has a phone and no scanner.
- 0:54 Gary wears the Sardines, on a breakaway collar, indoors.

How it works
Why a tag any phone can read beats a number only a vet can

Any phone, no app, straight to you
The finder points a phone camera at the QR code on the back, or taps the tag with a phone that has NFC, and her profile opens in the browser: no app to download, nothing to sign up for.
- What you chose to showThey see what you chose to show, your phone numbers, her name, the medical note that says she is on medication, and a button to tell you she is found.

Alerts, and details that never go stale
When the tag is scanned you get a notification in the Ask A Vet app, with the scan's location where the finder's phone shares it.
- Live on the collar in secondsAnd because the tag points to a profile rather than carrying an engraving, a new phone number, a new address or a new medical note takes seconds to change and is live on the collar the same moment.
Silent silicone, on a breakaway collar
The charm is soft silicone, so it does not jingle against the buckle, and it clips to the D-ring of the collar with a spring ring.
- A breakaway collar and nothing elseIt goes on a breakaway collar and nothing else: a cat collar has to open under her weight if it catches.
- The Slide-On threads flatFor the cat who chews anything that dangles, the Slide-On threads flat onto the strap with nothing hanging at all.
Size guide
Two sizes, fourteen designs, and the collar it goes on
-
Selected
Small
About 10 g (admin); to be confirmedThe cat size: most cats and every kitten
-
Selected
Medium
About 10 g (admin); to be confirmedA larger tag: a wide collar or a big cat
-
Small for a cat, whatever her size: the tag hangs below the collar, and a charm that swings gets chewed and caught. Medium is a larger tag for a wide collar, easier to scan at arm's length, and for the big cat who does not notice it. The measurements of both print here once one of each is on the bench.
-
The Slide-On for the cat who chews or bats at anything that dangles, and for a collar with no D-ring: it threads flat onto the strap. It needs a strap it fits, and the collar widths each size takes print here once measured.
-
Breakaway collar only, fitted with two fingers flat between collar and neck, checked weekly, and checked every few days on a kitten, who grows out of a collar in a month. The tag is on top of the microchip, not instead of it.

Specifications
- How it works
- A printed QR code on the back and an NFC chip inside. A phone camera reads the code; a phone with NFC reads the chip with a tap. Either opens her Ask A Vet profile in the browser; no app for the finder
- The profile
- Set up in the Ask A Vet app (free) when you activate the tag: her name, your contacts, medical notes and what you choose to show a finder. Free for life; no subscription for the tag. The app's Premium plan is separate and optional
- Alerts
- A notification when the tag is scanned, with the scan's location where the finder's phone shares it (the listing). What the finder sees and what you are sent are confirmed with the app team before this prints
- Battery
- None. The QR is printed and the NFC chip is passive; nothing to charge, ever
- Material
- Soft silicone charm (the two-tag bundle's listing), a spring clip ring (steel, to be confirmed). The Slide-On is a silicone strip with the code on it
- Sizes
- Small and Medium; the listing calls the option Accessory size and gives no dimensions. Both are measured before this prints, with the collar widths the Slide-On takes
- Weight
- About 10 g on every variant in admin; to be confirmed on the scale
- Designs
- Avocado, Boba, Chocolate Pink, Chocolate Purple, Coffee, Donut, Dumpling, Ramen, Sakura Matcha, Salmon Sushi, Sardines, Black, White, and the Slide-On
- Collar
- Not included. A breakaway cat collar with a D-ring for the charms; a strap the Slide-On fits
- In the box
- One tag, the clip ring and setup instructions (the two-tag bundle's pack list); to be confirmed against the box
- Designed by
- Dr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian, Ask A Vet and PURRZ™
- Made in

How to
How to activate it, and what to put on it

Activate it before it goes on her
Scan the tag yourself. It opens the setup page: download the Ask A Vet app, create her profile and link the tag. Ten minutes on the couch.

Put on it what a finder needs
Two phone numbers, one of them not yours. Her name. The medical line that matters: on medication, indoor only, do not feed. Not your address.

Onto a breakaway collar
Clip ring through the D-ring; the Slide-On threads onto the strap. Two fingers flat under the collar, and the collar opens if you pull it hard.

Test it with someone else's phone
Have a friend scan the code and tap the tag. Check the profile shows what you meant, and check the alert arrives on yours.

Keep it current
A new number, a move, a new medication: change it in the app the same day. Check the collar weekly and the charm for chew marks.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
A cat collar must be a breakaway collar, one that opens under her weight if it catches on a branch or a fence, and this tag goes on nothing else; a fixed collar with a dangling tag is a strangulation risk, and the emergency room sees the result. Fit it with two fingers flat between collar and neck, check it weekly, and check a kitten's every few days, because she grows out of it in a month. The tag is on top of the microchip, not instead of it: the chip is what a vet or a shelter reads when she arrives without a collar, so keep the registry's phone number current too. A cat who chews at the charm gets the Slide-On, and a charm with a chewed edge comes off before a piece of it is swallowed. If she goes outside, a bell on the collar is a separate decision, and the birds would like you to make it. A collar that has caught, or a swallowed piece of charm, is a same-day vet visit.
Why I designed it
The number on her collar should be the one you have now.
Too many of the microchips I scan in the emergency room lead to an old number. The owner moved, changed phones, split up, and the registry still has the details from the day she was chipped. A finder in the street cannot read a chip anyway. This tag fixes both: anyone with a phone scans or taps it and sees what you chose to share, you get an alert that she has been found, and when your number changes you change it in the app in seconds. No battery, no subscription, and it is silent on the collar. Gary wears the Sardines, on a breakaway collar, indoors.

How does it work?
A finder points a phone camera at the QR code on the back, or taps the tag with a phone that has NFC, and her profile opens in the browser: your numbers, her name, the notes you chose to share, and a button to tell you she is found. You get the alert in the Ask A Vet app. Nothing to download for the finder, nothing to charge, and before you activate it the same scan opens the setup page.
Do I need the app, or a subscription?
You need the free Ask A Vet app once, to activate the tag and set up her profile; the finder needs nothing. There is no subscription for the tag: her profile and the alerts are free for as long as she wears it. The app has a Premium plan for vet chat and the tracker features, and it is separate and optional; nothing about the tag changes if you never take it.
Is it instead of a microchip?
No, on top of it. The chip is under her skin and only a vet, a shelter or a council reader can read it, which means she has to be picked up and taken somewhere first; a tag gets her home from the street the same afternoon. Keep both, and keep the registry's phone number current, because the chip only works if the number it leads to is yours.
Which size, and what is the Slide-On?
Small for a cat, whatever her size: the charm hangs below the collar and a big one swings and gets chewed. Medium is a larger tag for a wide collar or a big cat, and easier to scan at arm's length. The Slide-On is a flat strip that threads onto the collar strap with nothing dangling, for the chewer and for a collar with no D-ring. The dimensions and the collar widths print here once measured.
What collar should it go on?
A breakaway cat collar, and nothing else. Cats climb and squeeze through things, and a collar that does not open under her weight is a strangulation risk; the tag adds a dangle to catch on. Fit it with two fingers flat between collar and neck, check it weekly, and check a kitten's every few days. If she goes outside, a bell on the collar is a separate decision that the local birds would like you to make.
My cat never goes outside. Does she need one?
Indoor cats are the ones who get lost worst, because nobody knows the neighbourhood, least of all the cat. The open window in a heatwave, the tradesman who left the door, the move to a new house, the carrier that opened at the vet: an indoor cat out for the first time hides, and the person who finds her a week later has a phone and no scanner. The tag is for that afternoon.
What if it arrives damaged or will not scan?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. If the QR will not scan, try the NFC tap and clean the code; if neither works, the tag is replaced. A charm she has chewed through is replaced at our discretion and comes off the collar first.
Part of the Ask A Vet ecosystem
Her profile lives in the Ask A Vet app. The tag is the door to it.
PURRZ™ is the cat product arm of Ask A Vet, Dr Duncan Houston's animal health platform. The tag opens her profile; the same app tracks her weight, vaccinations and symptoms, sets worming and flea reminders, and puts a certified vet in the chat when something is not right.
Lost-cat profile
What a finder sees when they scan the tag.
Health tracking
Weight, vaccinations, medications, symptoms.
Certified vet chat

Reminders
