Why this cave

  • Designed by Dr Duncan Houston
  • Tested by Gary
  • A roof, a door and shag pile
  • Rated to 7 kg, three colours

How it works

Why the Bunny Shag Cave works for a cat who hides to sleep

Illustrated Bunny Shag Cave in Cream from the front, the two ears hanging either side of the round door and a cat lying inside with her head and paws at the door

A roof, a wall and one way in

Give a cat who has just arrived somewhere new a box to hide in and she comes out sooner than the cat without one; shelters put a box in every cage for that reason.

  • Hidden, she sleeps properlyHiding is how a cat copes, and sleeping hidden is how she sleeps properly.
  • Nothing arrives from behindThe cave is a roof, soft walls and one door to watch the room through, so nothing arrives from behind.
Illustrated Bunny Shag Cave in Cream, a cat inside kneading the plush cushion at the door with one paw raised

Pile to knead, warmth she makes herself

Kneading is a kitten habit most cats keep for life, and long pile gives the claws something to work before she settles.

  • Plush and roof hold the heatNo electrics: the plush and the roof hold the heat she gives off, the way a duvet does, so a cat curled inside is warmer than one on a flat mat, which is what an old or a thin cat is after. In summer, out of the sun.
Illustrated Bunny Shag Cave in its three colours side by side, White, Cream and Brown, a cat sitting between the White and Cream caves with a paw up at an ear

One size, three colours, and the ears

46 by 35 by 30 cm, rated to 7 kg: a big cat curls in it, a kitten disappears.

  • Belongs in the loungeWhite, Cream or a light tan Brown, the one bed in the range that belongs in the lounge.
  • The ears get batted going inThe ears hang either side of the door and get batted going in; a cat who chews them loses it.
  • Spot clean

Three rules for choosing

  • Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 38 cm she curls inside with the roof above her; it is rated to 7 kg, and a 7 kg cat curls rather than stretches. Over that, she is a Deluxe Donut Bed Large cat, not a cave cat.

  • Kittens and small cats disappear in it, which is what they want. Two cats do not share a cave with one door: in a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one, or the shy cat never gets to use it.

  • Old and stiff cats: the sill of the door is low, so there is no step, and a soft roof to push under is easier than a wall to climb. A cat who has stopped using a bed or a cave she loved is a vet visit before it is a new bed.

How to

How to get a cat to use a new cave

  • Illustrated man kneeling with both hands on the roof of the Cream Bunny Shag Cave, standing it up, a cat sitting beside it

Unfold it and wait a day

It arrives folded. Take it out of the bag, shake the pile out, stand the dome up and give it a day to loft before you judge the roof.

  • Illustrated Cream Bunny Shag Cave on the floor at the foot of a single bed, a cat lying inside looking out of the door

Put it where she already hides

The wardrobe floor, the side of the bed, the corner behind the couch. Not a new spot; a new cave in her old spot.

  • Illustrated Cream Bunny Shag Cave on the floor beside a beige armchair, a cat lying inside looking out of the door

Back to the wall, door to the room

She wants to watch the room from inside, with nothing arriving from behind. Push the back of the dome against a wall or the sofa.

  • Illustrated cat sniffing a lilac blanket laid inside the Cream Bunny Shag Cave, her head at the door

    Her smell before yours

The blanket or jumper she sleeps on now goes on the floor inside for the first week. Do not put her in it, and do not stand over it.

  • Illustrated man kneeling and drawing a lint roller over the pile of the Cream Bunny Shag Cave, a cat sitting beside it watching

Shade in summer, clean on the schedule

Plush under a roof holds heat, so it moves out of the sun when the house warms up. Lint-roll the pile weekly.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

A plush cave has three things to watch. A cat who chews the pile, pulls at the ears or eats the fluff should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet; swallowed pile and stuffing are an obstruction, not a hairball. Heat: there are no electrics, so nothing can burn her, but shag under a roof holds warmth, and a cave in the summer sun is a cave she overheats in, so it moves to the shade with the door to the room. And hiding itself: a cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong. Hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. Clean it the same day you treat for fleas, because the eggs are in the bed, not on the cat. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one. And it is not for rabbits, whatever the ears suggest: rabbits eat plush. When in doubt, ask your vet.

Why I designed it

The laundry basket, done properly.

Ask any vet where the cat sleeps at home and the answer is the laundry basket, the wardrobe floor or the box the shopping came in: somewhere soft, with sides, a roof and one way in.

  • A cat asleep is off guardThat is not fussiness. A cat asleep is a cat off guard, and she picks the spot where nothing can arrive from behind.
  • A plush dome, one doorThe Bunny Shag Cave is that spot built on purpose: a plush dome, one door.
  • Long pile to kneadLong pile she can knead.
  • Her own warmth, held inAnd the warmth she makes herself held in.
  • The ears are for youThe ears are for you. Gary fits, just, and uses them as curtains.

    • This is a great bed, super soft. The rabbit ears fall over the front but they give the cats some felt privacy.

    • The soft shag material combined with floppy bunny ears creates an irresistibly cozy hideaway. My cat immediately claimed this as her favorite napping spot.

Why do cats sleep in baskets, boxes and wardrobes?

Because a cat asleep is a cat off guard, and she picks the place where nothing can arrive from behind: sides, a roof, one way in, and something soft under her. That is why the laundry basket beats the cushion you bought. The cave gives her all four on purpose, with a door to watch the room through and pile to knead before she settles.

    Will my cat fit?

Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 38 cm she curls inside with the roof above her. It is rated to 7 kg, and a 7 kg cat curls rather than stretches in it. A bigger cat, or one who sleeps stretched out, wants the Deluxe Donut Bed in Large instead.

    Is it heated?

No, and that is deliberate. There are no electrics, so there is nothing to chew and nothing that can burn her. The plush and the roof hold the heat she gives off, the way a duvet does, so a cat curled inside is warmer than one on a flat mat. In summer that cuts the other way: move it out of the sun, and if the house is hot she will pick the tiles anyway.

Can it go in the washing machine?

Spot clean: a lint roller on the pile weekly, a damp cloth on marks, and a clean the same day you treat for fleas, because flea eggs live in the bed, not on the cat.

My cat is shy. Will a cave help her settle?

A place to hide is the one thing that reliably helps a shy cat cope with a new house, a new cat or a noisy week, because it gives her somewhere to watch from until she is ready. It does not change who she is, so do not buy it for that. A cat who hides more than she used to, or stops coming out to eat, is showing you pain or illness, and that is a vet visit first.

What are the ears for, and can she chew them?

They hang either side of the door, get batted on the way in and out, and they are mostly for you: it looks like a rabbit asleep in the lounge. A cat who chews the ears, pulls at the pile or eats the fluff has it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet, because swallowed plush is an obstruction, not a hairball. Most cats knead it and leave it at that.

What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. It arrives folded, so give it a day to loft, put it where she hides now with her blanket inside, back to the wall and door to the room, and give her two weeks.
