- 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
- 0:13 Okay, cool. So, today I've got the Mount Cat-A-Rest. This is my design for a little mountain. I think cats really like it.
- 0:20 It's made out of synthetic felt. So, it's not natural felt, synthetic felt.
- 0:24 It means it's kind of got that crusty, crunchy, but soft surface that cats like, and they like to claw and sometimes chew. I don't want them to eat it, but they can chew it. Yeah.
- 0:36 Look, it's very nice with this kind of little fluffy top with a little hole in it. Very, you know, cats like to hide in places. It's got a firm bottom.
- 0:44 So, this is very easy to build. It comes kind of rolled up, and inside you do have the option for this little fluffy kind of surface or bedding for them.
- 0:55 It's very lightweight, so it's easy to move around.
- 0:58 Cats tend to kind of just, Gary seems to just kind of sit in here and sleep in this. It's, yeah, a nice little cozy hideout for them.
- 1:06 I would say that cats love hideaways. They like to be kind of feel protected.
- 1:11 Yeah, this is a nice little design for the house, Mount Cat-A-Rest.

How it works
Why the Mount Cat-A-Rest works for a shy indoor cat

One door, walls all round
A hiding cat wants to see out without being seen, and to know that nothing can arrive from behind.
- One way in, one directionA single round door low in the front gives her that: one way in, one direction to watch, felt on every other side.
- The door is where ambushes happenIt is also why cats who ignore an open bed will sleep in this one, and why the door is where the ambushes happen.

Why a cone works
The cone is 52 cm across at the floor and 45 cm at the peak: room to turn round at the bottom and something to press her back against on every side.
- The walls slope inThe walls slope in rather than standing square, closer to the gap under a bed than to a box.
- Quiet under claws, holds heatFelt is quiet under claws, holds heat and keeps its shape when she leans on it.

One panel, press studs, flat
One shaped felt panel with the door already cut.
- Press studs, no tools, no glueWrap it into the cone and close the press studs down the front seam: no tools, no glue.
- Undo the studs, it lies flatUndo the studs and it lies flat for the lint roller, the vacuum or the suitcase.
- Trim and pom-pom shed a littleThe white fur trim and the pom-pom on the peak are decoration; they shed a little, so check them when you clean.

Three rules for choosing
-
Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 40 cm she can turn round on the floor of the cone; it is rated to 10 kg. The door is the limit for a big cat.
-
Two cats: a cone with one door is one cat's territory, not a shared bed. In a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one, and this counts as one.
-
Kittens: a good first hideaway because it is dark and low at the door. Check the press studs are closed and the pom-pom is firmly on, because a kitten chews anything that moves.

How to
How to get a cat to use a new cave

Snap it together in her room
Felt smells of the bag it shipped in for ten minutes. Close the studs in the room she will use it in and let her supervise.

Put it where she already hides
Beside the sofa, in the corner she retreats to, near where she sleeps now. Not the laundry.

Door to the room, back to the wall
Turn the door towards where the household happens so she can watch it, and put the back against a wall so nothing can come from behind.

A treat, then leave it alone
A treat inside, her blanket on the floor of it if she has one, and two weeks before you judge it. Do not put her in it.

Lay it flat to clean
Once a week, undo the studs, lint-roll or vacuum the inside, and snap it back up. Check every stud has closed.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
Felt sheds a little at first and the fur trim on the peak sheds more; a cat who eats the fluff, chews the pom-pom or works at the press studs should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet. Check every stud is closed after assembly and after each clean, or the seam opens under a cat leaning on it. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one, or the shy cat never gets to use it. Keep it out of the sun in summer; felt holds heat. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.
Why I designed it
A mountain she can disappear into.
Watch where a shy cat chooses to hide and it is nearly always somewhere dark with one opening and a wall at her back: under the bed, at the back of the wardrobe, in the box the shopping came in.
- One round door, on purposeThe cone does that on purpose: one round door.
- A sloping felt wallA sloping felt wall on every other side.
- Height to sit up inAnd enough height in the middle to sit up in.
- Furniture, not a pet bedBecause it looks like furniture rather than a pet bed, it stays in the living room where she wants to be, instead of being moved to the laundry.
- Claimed in the first hourGary claimed it in the first hour.

Why a mountain, and does the shape matter?
The shape is the useful part, the snow is the joke. A cone gives her a round floor to turn on, a wall that slopes in over her back on every side, and one door. That is the gap under the bed, rebuilt in felt and put in the living room. The white peak and the pom-pom are decoration: they make it furniture you leave out rather than a pet bed you hide.
How big is it, and will a big cat fit?
It is 52 cm across the floor and 45 cm to the peak, and it is rated to 10 kg. Measure your cat curled up, nose to tail base: under about 40 cm she has room to turn round. The door is the limit for a large cat. A Maine Coon may fit through and find the headroom tight; Gary, a Ragdoll, fits.
Is it hard to put together?
No. It is one shaped felt panel with the door already cut. Wrap it round into the cone and close the press studs down the front seam, no tools. Do it in the room she will use it in, and check every stud has clicked shut, because the seam is what holds the shape when she leans on it.
How do I clean felt and the fur trim?
Undo the studs and lay it flat, then a lint roller or the vacuum brush over both sides; the inside is where the hair collects. A damp cloth for marks. Brush the fur trim by hand. Do not put felt through the washing machine, it loses its shape. It sheds a little fluff in the first weeks, which is normal.
Is it good for two cats?
It is one cat's cave, and that is the point of one door: whoever is inside owns it. Two cats who get on will take turns, and the door becomes the place one waits for the other. The rule in a multi-cat house is one hiding place per cat plus one, so a two-cat home wants three spots, and this counts as one.
My cat has started hiding all the time. Will this help?
No, and please do not buy it for that. A cat who suddenly hides more, stops coming out to eat or stops using a favourite spot is showing you pain or illness, and that is a vet visit first. A hiding place is for a healthy cat's normal need to be out of sight sometimes, not a treatment for a cat who has changed.
What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat ignoring it in week one is normal: the right spot, the door facing the room, a treat inside, and two weeks.
