- 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
- 0:03 Oh, okay. This is Alcatraz. That's right, Alcatraz. This is because it looks like a prison or castle kind of thing.
- 0:11 It is just an oval house. It's got a hole at the front and a hole at the side on the left-hand side so the cat can go in and out there and play with them.
- 0:17 This one looks like a prison or a castle-y thing to me.
- 0:21 Anyway, cats can sit on top, they can go in and out, and it is quite strong. Put that together, quite good.

How it works
Why the Al-Cat-Raz Cave works for an indoor cat

Top bunk, bottom bunk
Stand an oval felt tube on its end and you get two rooms.
- Open top, head over the rimThe top is open, so a cat sits in it like a well, walls all round, head over the rim.
- A dark, enclosed caveThe bottom is a cave with a round door at the front and a second in the left-hand side, dark and enclosed.
- Most cats use bothMost cats use both in a day: the top when the house is busy, the cave when it is time to disappear.

Two doors, on purpose
A round door at the front and a second in the left-hand side, both low in the wall: two ways into the cave, and felt walls everywhere else.
- What makes the house a gameIt is also what makes the house a game: a cat inside watching paws go past a door, a cat outside waiting for a nose to appear.
- Two cats play without being taughtTwo cats who live together will play this without being taught.

Felt, pegged, flat-packed
It arrives flat, 37 by 31 by 8 cm, and the panels peg together along the rims, no tools; the white pegs are the fixings, not decoration.
- Warm, quiet under clawsFelt is warm, quiet under claws and holds its shape.
- Lint-rolls or vacuums cleanIt sheds a little at first, lint-rolls or vacuums clean, and the open top means you can reach the inside without taking anything apart.

Three rules for choosing
-
Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 40 cm she fits the open top; the house is rated to 10 kg.
-
Two cats: one up, one down works when they are friends. In a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one, and this counts as one, not two.
-
Kittens: the cave is a good first hideaway because it is low and dark; the open top is a climb. Check the pegs are seated, because a kitten chews anything that sticks out.

How to
How to get a cat to use a new cave

Build it out of the bag
Felt smells of the bag it shipped in for ten minutes. Peg it together in the room she will use it in and let her supervise.

Put it where she already hides
Beside the sofa, in the corner she retreats to, near where she sleeps now. Not the laundry.

Leave the top open and the doors clear
Do not put a blanket over the top; the open well is half the point. A treat in the cave, her blanket in the top, and two weeks before you judge it.

Play through a door
A wand or a feather attachment past a door from outside; the ambush from inside is the game the doors were cut for.

Vacuum through the top
Once a week, reach in through the open top. Hair and felt fluff collect in the cave.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
Felt sheds a little at first, and a cat who eats the fluff or chews the pegs should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet. Check the pegs are seated after assembly and after every clean. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one, or the shy cat never gets to use it. Keep it out of the sun in summer; felt holds heat. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.
Why I designed it
The only cell a cat checks into by choice.
The name is a joke; the idea is not.
- Both in one oval footprintA cat wants two things from a hiding place that usually need two pieces of furniture: somewhere enclosed to disappear into, and somewhere raised to watch from. This gives her both in one oval footprint.
- Two doors into the caveA door at the front and a second in the left-hand side lead into the cave.
- The open top is a wellThe open top is a well she sits in with a felt wall at her back and her chin on the rim.
- In a two-cat houseIn a two-cat house one takes each, and the doors are where the ambushes happen.
- Gary takes the topGary takes the top. Nobody has been offered the cave.

Is it really two levels?
It is one oval felt tube stood on its end, open at the top, with a round door at the front and a second in the left-hand side. The top is a well a cat sits in; the bottom is the cave she reaches through the doors. A felt floor divides them, so she gets a lookout above and a hide below in one footprint.
How big is it, and will a big cat fit?
Assembled it is 58 cm long, 33 cm deep and 30 cm high, and it is rated to 10 kg. Measure your cat curled up, nose to tail base: under about 40 cm she fits the open top. The doors are the limit for the cave; a large Ragdoll or a Maine Coon will use the top and may not bother with the doors.
Is it hard to put together?
It arrives flat and pegs together along the rims, no tools. The white pegs are the fixings. Build it in the room she will use it in, check the pegs are seated when you finish, and again after each clean.
How do I clean felt?
Vacuum it or run a lint roller over it; the open top means you can reach the whole inside. A damp cloth for marks. Do not put felt through the washing machine, it loses its shape. It sheds a little fluff in the first weeks, which is normal.
Is it good for two cats?
Better than most, because there are two places to be and one of them is above the other, which cats like. But a cave is one cat's territory, and the rule in a multi-cat house is one hiding place per cat plus one, so a two-cat home wants three spots; this counts as one.
My cat has started hiding all the time. Will this help?
No, and please do not buy it for that. A cat who suddenly hides more, stops coming out to eat or stops using a favourite spot is showing you pain or illness, and that is a vet visit first. A hiding place is for a healthy cat's normal need to be out of sight sometimes, not a treatment for a cat who has changed.
What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat ignoring it in week one is normal: the right spot, a treat in the cave, and two weeks.
