Why this cave
- Designed by Dr Duncan Houston
- Tested by Gary
- A roof without a door
- Two sizes, two prints
How it works
Why a hood beats a door for half the cats who hide

A roof over her back, nothing across the front
The hood covers the back, the sides and the top of the bed and stops at the front, so she lies with the room in view and nothing able to arrive from behind or above.
- The position a cat picksThat is the position a cat picks under a table or a bed.
- An open front asks nothingA door asks her to commit to a dark space; an open front asks nothing.

The low step in
The front of the base is a rolled rim a few centimetres high, not a wall, so an old cat with stiff hips, a kitten and a cat carrying weight all get in without a climb and out the moment they want to.

A cushion in a bowl, and a washable fabric
The base is a shallow padded bowl with a plush cushion set into it.
- Machine washable, wipes cleanThe fabric is machine washable and wipes clean.
- A wash, not a replacementOn a bed that matters: flea eggs live in bedding, and an accident should be a wash, not a replacement.

Three rules for choosing
-
Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 30 cm she curls on the Small cushion with the hood over her; over that, or a cat who sleeps half stretched, the Medium. They are rated to 5 kg and 10 kg, and weight is a rougher guide than length: a 6 kg cat is either long or overweight, and the two want different beds.
-
Two adult cats do not share a cave. Kittens share the Medium for a few months, then want one each. In a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one.
-
Old and stiff cats: the open front and the low rim are the point of this shape, but check the Small leaves her room to turn round; a cat who cannot turn in a bed stops using it. A cat who has stopped using a bed she loved is a vet visit before it is a new bed.

How to
How to set it up, and where to put it

Unpack it and let it stand
It ships compressed. Stand it up, push the hood into shape and give it a day to loft before you judge it.

Put it where she already hides
Under the table she sleeps under, the end of the couch, the corner she retreats to, with the back of the hood against a wall so nothing arrives from behind.

Point the opening at the room
The open front is the point: from inside she wants to see the door of the room. Do not face it into a corner.

Do not lure her in
Her blanket on the cushion, then leave it. A cat pushed into a bed avoids it. Give it two weeks.

Wash on a schedule
Every few weeks and the same day as any flea treatment.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
Nothing electric goes in this cave. A heat mat under a hood is a cat who cannot get away from the heat and a cord she can chew; the hood and her own body heat are the warmth, and the open front is what stops it overheating. A cat who chews the plush or pulls the filling out should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet: swallowed stuffing is an obstruction, not a hairball. Wash it the same day you treat for fleas, because the eggs are in the bed, not on the cat. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong; hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one. If anything about how she uses it worries you, ask your vet.
Why I designed it
The cat who wants cover, not a door.
Half the cats I see for hiding do not want a box.
- Cover and a clear viewThey want something over their back and a clear view of the room, which is why they sleep under the coffee table and not in the expensive igloo.
- A door means a dark spaceA door means committing to a dark space she cannot see out of.
- Nothing across the frontThe Cubby is the other half: a padded base, a hood over the back and the top, and nothing across the front.
- An exit she can seeShe gets the cover, the low step in and an exit she can see.
- Cooler than a closed caveOpen at the front, it also runs cooler than a closed cave.
- Gary sleeps with his head outGary sleeps in it with his head out.

Is it a cave or a bed?
Both, which is the point. The base is a padded oval bed with a plush cushion set into it, and a soft hood covers the back, the sides and the top. The front is open. She gets the roof and the walls of a cave with the view and the easy step in of a bed. A cat who will not go through a door usually goes into this.
Which size?
Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 30 cm, the Small; over that, or a cat who sleeps half stretched, the Medium. They are rated to 5 kg and 10 kg; weight is a rougher guide than length. Two kittens share the Medium until they are not kittens, and then they want one each. The full guide is in the size section above.
Is it warm? Can I put a heat mat in it?
It is warm the way a hood is: it holds the heat she makes, and the open front lets the excess out, which is why she keeps using it when a closed cave gets abandoned in summer. Do not put a heat mat in it. A mat under a hood is a cat who cannot get away from the heat and a cord she can chew.
Can it go in the washing machine?
The fabric is machine washable and wipes clean, and the reviews describe both. Between washes, wipe and spot clean, and wash it the same day as any flea treatment.
My cat hides under the bed. Will she use this?
She is the cat it is for. Under the bed gives her cover above and behind and a view of the door; this gives her the same, closer to you. Put it where she hides now, back to the wall, opening facing the room, her blanket on the cushion, and leave it alone for two weeks. A cat who has started hiding more than usual is a vet visit first.
How is it different from the 3-In-1 Cave?
Different shapes for different cats. The 3-In-1 Cave is a fabric cube that folds into a closed cave with a door, an open bed or a seat. The Cubby Cave does not fold and has no door: a padded base, a hood over the back and an open front, in two sizes. Buy the Cubby for the cat who wants cover without a door, the 3-In-1 for the cat whose taste changes with the seasons.
What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. It ships compressed, so give the hood a day to loft, put it where she sleeps now with her blanket on the cushion, and give her two weeks before you move it.
