Why this cave

  • Designed by Dr Duncan Houston
  • Tested by Gary
  • Cave, bed or seat
  • Cushion lifts out for the wash

How it works

Why one bed that folds beats three that do not

Illustrated 3-In-1 Cave in Grey in its three shapes, a cat in each: closed as a cube with a round door, open as a bed with walls, and folded again as a seat with a back

Three beds, one cube, no tools

The cube is fabric-covered foam panels that fold.

  • Closed, a cave for the hiderClosed, it is a 40 cm cave with a round door and a roof, for the hider and for winter.
  • A bed for the curlerFold the top down and back and it is a bed with walls on three sides, for the curler who wants her back against something.
  • A seat for the sprawlerOnce more and the walls become a seat with a back, for the sprawler. Ten seconds.
Illustrated 3-In-1 Cave in Grey three ways: a cat looking out of the closed cube, a cat asleep in the open bed and a cat lying on the seat

Why she changes her mind

A cat picks her bed by temperature first.

  • An enclosed bed holds the heatAn enclosed bed holds the heat she makes, which she wants in winter and does not want in a hot flat, when she moves to the tiles.
  • Age does the restAge does the rest: kittens hide, adults curl, old cats want low sides and a view.
  • One bed that changes shapeOne bed that changes shape is cheaper than three, and it stays where she trusts it.
Illustrated man carrying the Grey 3-In-1 Cave closed as a cube by its strap handle, a cat walking beside him

The cushion comes out, the cube gets carried

A plush cushion lifts off the floor of the cube and goes in the machine, which on a bed is the point: flea eggs live in bedding, and an accident is a wash, not a replacement.

  • A strap handle, folds flatA strap handle carries it, and it folds flat to 37 x 19 x 15 cm.

Three rules for choosing

  • Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 35 cm she curls inside the closed cube with the door above her. A bigger cat uses it open, as the bed or the seat, where the walls are the limit rather than the roof.

  • Two cats do not share a cube with one door. In a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one, and the open shapes count as beds, not hiding places.

  • Old and stiff cats: the seat shape has the lowest step in and a back to lean on, which is what a cat with sore hips wants. A cat who has stopped using a bed she loved is a vet visit before it is a new bed.

How to

How to set it up, and when to change its shape

  • Illustrated man kneeling with his hands on the Grey cube, the cushion inside its round door, a cat sitting beside it

Unfold it and let it stand a day

It arrives folded flat. Open it into the cube, push the panels square, put the cushion in and give the foam a day to settle.

  • Illustrated cat curled up asleep in the Grey 3-In-1 Cave folded open as a bed with walls

Start with the shape she already uses

A hider gets the cube closed; a cat who sleeps on the couch gets the seat; a cat who curls in the washing gets the open bed. Not a new habit, a new bed in an old one.

  • Illustrated cat asleep in the Grey open bed on the floor beside an armchair

Put it where she sleeps now

The end of the couch, the corner of the bedroom, the sunny spot at 10 am, back to a wall so nothing arrives from behind.

  • Illustrated 3-In-1 Cave in Cow Brown twice: a cat asleep in the closed cube and a cat stretched out in the open bed

    Change it with the weather

Closed when the house is cold. When it warms up, fold it open or into the seat, and move it out of the sun; foam under fabric holds heat.

  • Illustrated man lint-rolling a Cow Brown cube, the cushion in an open washing machine behind him, a cat watching

Wash the cushion on the schedule

Every few weeks, and the same day as any flea treatment. Lint-roll the shell.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Nothing electric goes in this cube. It is an enclosed foam box, and a heat mat inside it means a cat who cannot get away from the heat and a cord she can chew, so warm her the way the closed shape already does, with her own body heat, and fold it open when the house is warm. A cat who chews the foam through the fabric or pulls the cushion apart should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet: swallowed foam is an obstruction, not a hairball. Wash the cushion the same day you treat for fleas, because the eggs are in the bed, not on the cat. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong; hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one. When in doubt, ask your vet.

Why I designed it

She will not sleep in the same bed in January and July. So the bed changes.

Owners buy a cave in winter and by summer the cat is asleep on the tiles next to it, because an enclosed bed holds heat and a hot cat wants air and a view.

  • Three beds in oneThen the kitten who hid in a box grows into a cat who sprawls. This cube is the three beds she will want at different times, in one.
  • A cave with a doorClosed, a cave with a door.
  • A bed with wallsThe top folded down, a bed with walls.
  • A seat with a backFolded once more, a seat with a back.
  • The cushion lifts outThe cushion lifts out for the wash.
  • Gary uses the seatGary uses the seat and ignores the other two.

How does it fold, and is it hard to do?

The cube is fabric-covered foam panels joined at their edges. Closed, it is a cave with a round door in the front. Fold the top panel down and back and the front opens out into a bed with walls on three sides. Fold the same panels once more and the walls stand up behind as a seat with a back. Ten seconds each way, no tools and no fastenings, and the cushion moves with it.

    Will my cat fit?

Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 35 cm she curls inside the closed cube with the door above her. A bigger cat uses it open, as the bed or the seat, where there is no roof to limit her. The Deluxe Donut Bed in Large is the bed for a cat who sleeps stretched out.

Is it warm? Can I put a heat mat in it?

It is warm the way any enclosed bed is: the walls and the roof hold the heat she gives off. Do not put a heat mat in it. An enclosed foam box with a mat inside is a cat who cannot get away from the heat and a cord she can chew. If the house is cold, fold it closed; if it is warm, fold it open or into the seat and move it out of the sun.

Can it go in the washing machine?

The cushion, yes: it lifts out and goes in the machine, which is what matters most, because flea eggs live in bedding and the occasional accident is a cycle, not a replacement. The cube itself: lint-roll the shell.

Cave, bed or seat: which shape should I start with?

The one closest to where she sleeps now. A cat who hides under the bed gets it closed. A cat who sleeps on the couch or the back of a chair gets the seat. A cat who curls in the washing basket gets the open bed. Then change it with the seasons: closed when the house is cold, open when it is warm. A cat who suddenly stops using a shape she loved is a vet visit first.

Is it the same as the Cubby Cave?

It is close. Both are fabric cubes in Grey or Cow Brown with one door. This one folds into the bed and the seat shapes; the Cubby Cave comes in two sizes. Buy this one if you want the shape to change, and the Cubby Cave if you want the bigger size.

What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. It arrives folded flat, so give the foam a day to settle, start with the shape closest to where she sleeps now, put her blanket on the cushion, and give her two weeks before you change anything.
