One cat inside, one on the roof. Measure her curled up, nose to tail base: under about 40 cm she curls inside on the cushion. At 23 cm high she lies inside rather than sits up, and the roof is where she sits.

  1. 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:03 This one's called the Catception Tunnel. It's just the cat-shaped toy house. Again, made out of the felt material.
  3. 0:09 It's got a little toy like a tail that flaps up and down. They can go in here, they can go in the other side, and they can go in and run around.
  4. 0:20 Around the outside here on top, you've got a bell ball that'll go around the outside of the cat.
  5. 0:25 It stops on either side; it doesn't swing around down here because that's where the cat goes in and out of the tunnel, but the ball goes up in here.
  6. 0:31 So, they can play with this one, sit on top, go inside, and they've got a little tail flap to play with.

How it works

Why a den with a toy on the doorstep beats a bed and a toy box

Illustrated cat lying inside the den of the Grey Catception Cave with a paw out of the door on the bell ball in the track

A toy she plays from inside cover

A cat hunts from behind something and strikes when the prey passes the gap.

  • A bell ball in a trackThe bell ball runs in a track round the base and the slots are the gaps, so she plays it lying inside the den with a paw out, or from the roof reaching down.
  • The Boulder's game, built inIt is the Boulder's game built into a bed, there at three in the morning when you are not.
  • A felt tail that flapsA second toy, attached: a felt tail off one side that flaps up and down.

A den below, a roof above

Inside, an opening at each end, a plush cushion and walls all round: the hide a wary cat wants.

  • On top, the room in viewOn top, a flat roof plate she can lie on with the room in view, and in the photographs that is where the cat usually is.
  • Low enough for an old catTwo cats use it without sharing, one below and one above, and a roof at 23 cm is low enough for an old cat to step onto.

Felt, pegs and a lint roller

The pleated white walls and the grey plates peg together without tools and fold flat again.

  • Wiped, not soakedFelt is quiet and warm and holds fur, so the roof gets a lint roller once a week and the cushion comes out for a wash; the felt itself is wiped, not soaked.
  • Check every pegCheck every peg after assembly and after each clean, because a cat leaning on an open seam opens it.

Three rules for choosing

  • Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 40 cm she curls inside on the cushion; over that, she uses the roof and the Petal Paws House is the bigger den. The house is about 23 cm high, so inside she lies rather than sits up; the roof is where she sits and watches.

  • Two cats use it without sharing, one in the den and one on the roof. In a multi-cat house the rule is still one hiding place per cat plus one, and the roof counts as a perch, not a hiding place.

  • Old and stiff cats: the roof is a low step and the den has no lip to climb, which suits them; check she can turn round inside. A cat who has stopped using a bed she loved is a vet visit before it is a new bed.

How to

How to peg it together, where to put it, and how to keep it clean

  • Illustrated man kneeling and pressing a peg into the roof of the Grey Catception Cave, the cushion in the den and the ball in the track, a cat watching

Peg it together on the floor

Lay the plates out, stand the walls, close every peg, then drop the ball into the track and the cushion into the den. Tug each peg before you let her near it.

  • Illustrated man sliding the Grey Catception Cave under a wooden coffee table, a cat walking up to its door

Put it where she already sleeps low

Under the coffee table, along the window wall, at the end of the couch, with one side to a wall and an opening facing the room.

  • Illustrated man kneeling and rolling the bell ball along the track with a finger, a cat watching from the cushion inside the Grey Catception Cave

    Show her the ball once

Roll it round the track with a finger while she watches, then leave it. The first hit from inside the den is the one that teaches her the game.

  • Illustrated cat lying on the roof of the Grey Catception Cave, a cream blanket spread over the cushion in the den below

    Her smell before yours

The blanket she sleeps on now goes on the cushion for the first week. Do not put her in it; most cats find the roof first and the den in their own time. Give it two weeks.

  • Illustrated man crouching and lint-rolling tufts of fur off the roof of the Grey Catception Cave, a cat sitting beside it

Lint roller weekly, pegs after every clean

Felt holds fur. Roll or vacuum the roof and walls weekly, wash the cushion on the same schedule as her other bedding, and re-check every peg after you move or clean it.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Felt sheds a little at first, and a cat who eats the fluff or works at the pegs should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet; a loose peg is a swallowing risk. The ball is hollow with a bell inside: a ball she has cracked comes out of the track and goes in the bin, because a loose bell is small enough to swallow. Check every peg is closed after assembly and after each clean, or a seam opens under a cat leaning on it, and check the roof takes her weight before you let her make it hers. It is not for rabbits, whatever the pictures say: rabbits eat felt. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one, and the roof counts as a perch, not a hiding place. Keep it out of the sun in summer; felt holds heat, and a low roof holds it close. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.

Why I designed it

Cats hunt from cover. So the toy lives at the door.

Watch a cat with a ball: she does not chase it across the room, she waits behind something and hits it as it passes.

  • Cover first, then the strikeCover first, then the strike. Most cat houses give her the cover and put the toys somewhere else.
  • A bell ball in a trackThis one runs a bell ball in a track round the base, reached through slots, so she can lie inside with her paw through the gap and hit it every time it rolls by.
  • A roof above, a cushion belowAbove her, a roof to lie on; below her, a cushion.
  • Shaped like a catIt is shaped like a cat because I could not resist.
  • Gary reaches down for the ballGary lies on the roof and reaches down for the ball.

    • I love the design, it's super cute. But too bad none of my cat play inside or with it.

    How big is it, really?

It is 53.5 x 54 x 23 cm. What the photographs show: it is low, and a grey British Shorthair lies flat on the roof with room to spare.

    Where is the tunnel?

The house is the tunnel: an opening at each end, so she goes in one side and out the other. The bell ball runs in a track round the top rim of the roof plate and stops either side of the doorway, so it never crosses the way in.

My cat ignores new beds. Will she use this?

The four-star review on this page says her cats did not, and that is worth knowing. What works: put it where she already sleeps low, back to a wall, door facing the room, her blanket on the cushion, and roll the ball round the track once while she watches. Then leave it for two weeks. Most cats take the roof first and the den later, and a cat who never takes to it is a cat, not a fault.

    Can she sit on top?

Yes, and in the photographs that is where the cat mostly is. The roof is a flat felt plate with ears, pegged to the walls. There is no weight rating for the roof. Check the pegs after assembly and after each clean, because a cat leaning on an open seam opens it.

Is it safe to leave the ball in?

Yes, while the ball is whole. It is hollow with a bell inside and it lives in the track, so she plays it alone and you do not have to be there. A ball she has cracked comes out and goes in the bin, because a loose bell is small enough to swallow. A replacement ball is not sold on its own; the Boulder's bell ball is the same game.

    How do I clean felt?

A lint roller on the roof and walls once a week, a damp cloth on marks, and the cushion washed on the same schedule as her other bedding. Felt is wiped, not soaked; it holds water and loses its shape. If it needs more than that, it pegs apart flat and the panels can be brushed outside. Re-check every peg when it goes back together.

What if it arrives damaged or a peg will not close?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Felt panels arrive pressed flat; give them a day standing before you decide a seam is wrong, and peg it together on a hard floor so the plates sit square.
