  1. 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room. This is the Teddy Multi-Laser.
  2. 0:15 The reason why it's a multi-laser is that you can use it as a wand like my other toys, and you can use any of the toys along with them.
  3. 0:23 It doesn't come with any of these toys, but if you want to buy an attachment set, you can attach any of my toys like this onto the end of the laser toy and play with the cat like that. It does have that option.
  4. 0:35 And if you do have others, it'll work with most of the cat toys from other brands anywhere that have a clip-on. Oops, into the cat box.
  5. 0:43 So, one, this has that rod as an extra bit. Two, you do have different lights on here. So, you do have the laser.
  6. 0:54 You do have people that say lasers aren't very good because the cat's chasing and it doesn't have that kind of sense of satisfaction when it does get it. That's why we do have this wand thing on the end. Or you just give them another toy like a kicker or something like that.
  7. 1:09 When they do catch the laser or get close to it, you just throw them another toy and then they can jump on that, and then you pull the laser away. It just depends on how you use a laser.
  8. 1:17 I still think they're great because they get cats to run around. Like, if a cat's not going to chase toys or something, they might chase a laser. Cats generally like to do different things; you never know what they want to do.
  9. 1:29 Anyway, that's why I have the laser as an option. And, you know, you can change the shape of this. You probably can't see it too much, but there's different things that they can chase, like a butterfly, star, that kind of stuff, or just the laser pointer.
  10. 1:40 Other options on this product: it does have a torch or a light. So, if your cat doesn't chase the laser, you do have the light function so you can also look for stuff at night.
  11. 1:50 And the other thing is it does have a tiny little UV light on here. You can probably see it's a blue light there.
  12. 1:57 Maybe you can pick up a bit of a fungal infection with that. I would say it's not very accurate, but it does have it on there as an option if I wanted to add it, and I added it anyway.
  13. 2:06 It's quite nice, you know, it's the shape of a teddy bear. I didn't design that; they had it as an option with the manufacturer, and I thought it was quite good.
  14. 2:13 And you do have the telescopic rod. So, I think it works quite well for cats. That's the Teddy Multi-Laser.

How it works

Why the Teddy works for a bored indoor cat

Illustrated man in a purple jumper kneeling with the telescopic wand of the PURRZ™ Teddy Multi-Use Laser Toy extended, a cat crouched with both front paws on the feather attachment at its end

The catch is built in

Cats hunt in a sequence: stalk, chase, pounce, catch, and the catch is the part that satisfies.

  • Everything except the last stepA laser dot delivers everything except the last step, which is why some cats end up frustrated or stalking light on the walls.
  • A feather on a telescopic wandThe Teddy carries a feather on a telescopic wand out of the same handle.
  • Let her finish on the featherRun the dot for a few minutes, bring it to the feather, and let her finish.

Three lights, one handle

The head carries a red laser with a pattern switch, a white torch and a UV light.

  • The torch finds the catThe torch finds the cat under the bed.
  • UV shows up dried urineThe UV light shows up dried urine on carpet and skirting, which is how you find the spot a cat is using instead of the tray.
  • Not a medical instrumentIt is not a medical instrument: a glow on skin or fur means nothing without a vet.
The black handle of the PURRZ™ Teddy Multi-Use Laser Toy with its USB charging port circled and enlarged, and the words USB rechargeable, 18 cm closed, 41 cm extended, 3 cm wide, Black or Blue

Charges like a phone, fits in a pocket

18 cm closed, 41 cm with the wand out, 3 cm across, and it charges by USB instead of eating button batteries, which are a hazard in a house with a cat who chews.

  • A bear's head, Black or BlueBlack or Blue, one shape: a handle with a bear's head and ears on top, which is where the name comes from.

Three rules for choosing

  • One per household is plenty. Two cats can chase one dot; end each cat on the feather in turn, or the one who never catches anything goes looking for something else to kill.

  • Kittens and seniors: keep the laser to five minutes and spend the rest on the feather. A kitten learns the game fast; a stiff older cat should not be asked to leap after a dot on the wall.

  • A cat who keeps staring at walls, chasing reflections or stalking shadows after the game is fixating on light. Retire the laser for her and use the feather wand only.

How to

How to run a laser session that ends well

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper resting a hand on a table where the PURRZ™ Teddy Multi-Use Laser Toy lies plugged in to charge, a cat sitting at his feet looking up

    Charge it first

Plug it into a USB port before the first game, somewhere she cannot chew the cable.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper pointing the PURRZ™ Teddy Multi-Use Laser Toy at the floor, a cat crouched to chase the round red laser dot ahead of it

    Start on the floor

Put the dot a metre in front of her, never on her. Move it like prey: short runs, a stop, a dart behind a chair leg.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper pointing the PURRZ™ Teddy Multi-Use Laser Toy at the floor, the red laser now a star shape and a cat creeping after it

    Change the pattern

The switch cycles the laser shapes, a butterfly and a star among them. A different shape after a minute keeps a clever cat interested.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper kneeling with the wand of the PURRZ™ Teddy Multi-Use Laser Toy extended, a cat biting the feather attachment at its end

    End on the feather

Extend the wand, land the dot on the feather, and let her catch and bite it. Every session ends with something in her mouth.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper putting the PURRZ™ Teddy Multi-Use Laser Toy and its feather attachment into the top drawer of a white chest of drawers, a cat sitting beside him looking up

    Put it away

Collapse the wand and put the handle in a drawer. A feather left out gets eaten; a laser left out gets chewed.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Never point the laser at a cat's eyes, or anyone's, and never hand it to a child to run unsupervised. End every laser session on the feather or a treat; a cat who never catches anything can start stalking shadows and reflections, and some cats fixate on light, in which case the laser is retired and the wand stays. The feather attachment is small: supervise, and take it away from a cat who chews feathers off and swallows them, because swallowed feather shafts and string are how cats end up in surgery. The UV light is not a Wood's lamp and does not diagnose ringworm: only some strains of the usual cat ringworm fungus glow under a proper lamp, and lint, scale and ointments glow too, so a glow or no glow on her skin means nothing. Patchy hair loss, scaling or a cat who keeps scratching is a vet visit, not a torch. A cat urinating outside the tray is a vet visit before it is a cleaning job, and a male cat who is straining is a same-day emergency. If anything about her eyes, her skin or her tray worries you, ask your vet.

Why I chose it

A laser is a hunt with no ending. I gave it one.

Most of the bored cats I see are indoor cats with nothing to hunt.

  • The dot can never be caughtA laser fixes the chase and breaks the catch: the dot can never be caught, and a cat who never wins starts stalking shadows and reflections.
  • A feather from the same handleSo this one carries a feather on a telescopic wand out of the same handle.
  • Land it on the featherChase the dot for a few minutes, then land it on the feather and let her kill something.
  • A torch for 5 amThe torch is for finding the cat at 5 am.
  • A UV lightThe UV light is for finding where the cat has been.
  • Gary destroys the featherGary ignores the dot and destroys the feather, which is the correct order.

    • Fun and useful game for our cats, which stimulates them to move

    • The multi-function capability is genuinely useful. My cats respond to the laser with full predator focus and the UV mode has revealed things on our carpet I perhaps didn't need to know. Excellent compact toy.

Are laser pointers bad for cats?

Not if the game has an ending. The dot can never be caught, and a cat who never wins can get frustrated or start stalking shadows and reflections. Keep sessions to five or ten minutes, move the dot like prey, and land it on the feather wand at the end so she catches and bites something real. Never point it at eyes. A cat who fixates on light after the game should lose the laser and keep the wand.

    What are the three lights?

A red laser with a pattern switch on the handle, a white torch, and a UV light, all in the head. The laser is the game. The torch is for the hallway at night and the toy under the couch. The UV light shows up dried urine on carpet, skirting and bedding, which is how you find where a cat has been going instead of the tray.

Can I use the UV light to check my cat for ringworm?

No. A vet checks for ringworm with a Wood's lamp, and even that misses it: only some strains glow, and lint, scale and ointments glow too, so a proper diagnosis needs a culture or a PCR test. This UV light is for finding urine on the carpet. If your cat has patchy hair loss, scaling or a circular bald spot, book a vet; ringworm spreads to people and it is treatable.

Is the feather wand any good, or is it a gimmick?

It is the reason to buy this one over a bare laser pointer. The steel rod telescopes out of the top of the handle to 41 cm with a feather clipped on the end, so you switch from dot to feather without putting anything down. Gary goes straight for the feather. Feathers wear out under a good hunter. Most clip-on toys from other brands fit the wand too. For a dedicated wand with refills in the box, the Bird Feather Wand Set is the one.

How long does the battery last?

It charges by USB, so there are no button batteries in the house, which matters with a cat who chews. Charge it from a standard USB port and keep the cable where she cannot chew it.

    Black or Blue?

Same handle, same lights, same wand. The photographs show the Black; the Blue is the same shape in blue. Pick whichever you will find in the drawer.

What if it arrives faulty or my cat is not interested?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat who ignores the dot in week one often wants the feather first: start there, and bring the dot in later.
