How it works
Why the kookaburra jingle jangle works for a cat who hunts by ear

Sound, then silence
A cat hunts with her ears before her eyes, and what she listens for is a pattern: a sound, a stop, a sound.
- Two small bells above the feathersTwo small bells above the feathers give the attachment exactly that when you drag it and stop it.
- She commits on the second twitchOut of sight behind a chair leg, hold it still, twitch it once, and she commits on the second twitch.
- The feathers are what she findsThe feathers are what she finds when she lands.

Kookaburra colours, for pale floors
White feathers with brown barred tips, bound under a swivel.
- The barring reads as a birdThe barring is what makes it read as a bird rather than a fluff of white, and it is the pack for pale carpet and daylight, where the plain white cockatoo one washes out.
- Cats see contrast and movementCats see contrast and movement rather than colour, so the choice between the packs is about your floor, not her taste. Swatters get both.

Clasp, two bells, swivel, and five of them
From the top: a short cord loop, a lobster clasp that snaps onto the loop of any wand string, the two bells, a steel swivel so a twisting cluster does not wind up your string, and the feathers beneath.
- Five in the boxA feather attachment is a consumable; a cat who catches it properly pulls feathers, and five in the box means the game does not stop when one goes.
Size guide
What is in the pack, and which wands it fits

10 to 15 cm each
Three rules for choosing
-
Fits any wand with a string that ends in a loop or a clip: the Bird Feather Wand Set, the Feather Toy Suction Cup Set, a fishing-rod style wand, a string on a stick. It does not fit a wand with a fixed, sewn-on toy.
-
The jingle jangle is the ground game: drag it, stop it, twitch it. Kittens, older cats and cats who will not leave the floor do best with it. Kookaburra colours for pale carpet and daylight, the cockatoo pack for dark floors and dim rooms; a leaper wants the helicopter dropped from height.
-
Retire an attachment when a feather comes off or a bell works loose. Loose feathers get eaten, and a bell is small enough to swallow. Five in the box is for this.

How to
How to play a wand game the cat wins

Clip one on
Open the clasp, hook it through the loop at the end of the wand string, let it close. Leave the other four in the box.

Play prey, not toy
Drag it along the floor in short runs and stops, behind a chair leg, under the edge of a rug. Let her stalk it.

Sound, stop, sound
Out of sight, hold it still. Count to three. One small twitch, so the bells sound once, then still again. Most cats commit on the second twitch.

Let her catch it
Every session ends with the attachment in her mouth and a minute to chew it. Pulling it away at the end is how cats learn the game is rigged.

Put the wand away
In a drawer, attachment and all. A wand left out is a string left out, and a string is the one toy that ends in surgery.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
A wand toy is for supervised play and goes in a drawer after it, every time, because a swallowed string is a surgical emergency and a cat will chew one when nobody is watching. The feathers pull out under a good catch and the two bells are small: retire an attachment when a feather goes or a bell loosens, and take the whole toy away from a cat who eats feathers rather than shaking them, because eating non-food things has causes and a vet should hear about it. The clasp and swivel are not for a cat to chew on unattended. If she vomits, strains or stops eating in the day or two after a play session and you cannot find all of an attachment, that is a same-day vet visit, not a wait-and-see.
Why I designed it
Prey makes a noise, then goes quiet. So does this.
A mouse under a leaf is not seen, it is heard: a rustle, a pause, another rustle, and the cat commits on the second one.
- That game, with a wandThe jingle jangle is that game with a wand. Drag it behind a chair, hold it still, count to three, twitch it once.
- The pounce comes at the silenceThe two bells sound, then stop, and the pounce comes at the silence.
- In kookaburra coloursThis pack is the cockatoo one in kookaburra colours, white with brown barred tips, which reads as a bird on pale carpet.
- Five to a boxFive to a box, because the catch is supposed to wreck them.
- Gary can hear one bellGary can hear one bell through two closed doors.

Are these real kookaburra feathers?
They should not be. The kookaburra is a protected native bird in Australia and its feathers cannot be sold. White feathers with brown barred tips in a kookaburra's colours are dyed farmed-bird feathers in every case I have seen.
Will it fit my wand?
If your wand has a string that ends in a loop or a small clip, yes: the lobster clasp opens, hooks through and closes. It fits the Bird Feather Wand Set, the Feather Toy Suction Cup Set and the usual fishing-rod style wands. It does not fit a wand with the toy sewn on. The wand is not in this box.
Kookaburra or cockatoo? What is the difference?
The attachment is the same: a cluster of feathers, two bells, a swivel, a clasp. The colour is the difference. Cats see movement and contrast rather than colour, so the brown barred tips are the ones that stand out on pale carpet in daylight, and the plain white cockatoo cluster is the one for dark floors and dim rooms. If she swats at everything, get both; the second colour is a new bird.
Why five, and how long do they last?
Because a feather attachment is meant to be caught, and a caught feather toy loses feathers. A light cat gets weeks out of one; a big cat breaks feathers off in a session and carries on playing with what is left. Five means the game does not stop when one goes. Retire an attachment when a feather comes off or a bell works loose.
Are the bells safe?
There are two on each attachment and they are small, which is why the attachment goes in a drawer after play and is retired when a bell works loose. A cat who chews the bells or the clasp rather than the feathers should have the toy taken away. Nothing with a string or a small part stays out unsupervised, and that includes a wand standing in a suction cup base once you leave the house.
Is it right for a kitten or an older cat?
Both, and better than the other shapes for an older cat: the game is on the floor, the sound does the work her eyes used to, and a slow twitch is all it takes. A kitten wants short sessions with the attachment always ending in her mouth for a minute, so she learns the game pays. A senior who has stopped chasing anything at all is worth a vet check before a new toy.
What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat who ignores it in the open often wants it hidden first; take it behind something, hold it still, and let one twitch of the bells do the introduction.
