It will not hold on textured tile, timber, painted walls or carpet, and a cup that lets go mid-swat sends a steel wand across the room, so test it with a good tug before you walk off.

How to set it up so it holds, and when to put it away

    Clean and wet the cup

    Wipe the tile or the glass and the rim of the cup, wet the rim, press the base down in the middle and push the lever over.

    Click the wand in and tug it

    The handle clicks into the socket. Pull the wand sideways, hard. If the cup shifts, start again on a smoother patch.

    Two minutes of you on the wand, then leave it standing while you cook. She learns it springs back on its own.

This is a wand toy that stands up on its own, and the rule for wand toys still applies: it is for play while someone is home, and it comes out of the base and goes in the drawer when you leave the house, every time, because a cat left alone with feathers, a cord and a bell will chew them, and a swallowed cord is a surgical emergency. The feathers pull out under a good catch and the bell is small: retire an attachment when a feather goes or the bell loosens, and take the whole toy away from a cat who eats feathers rather than shaking them, because eating things that are not food has causes and a vet should hear about it. Test the cup with a hard tug before you walk off; a cup that lets go mid-swat sends a steel wand across the room. If she vomits, strains or stops eating in the day or two after a play session and you cannot find all of an attachment, that is a same-day vet visit, not a wait-and-see.

Why I designed it

The best cat toy ever made needs you on the other end of it. This one stands up by itself.

A feather on a springy wand is the best cat toy there is, because it moves like prey: the flick, the stillness, the bounce. The trouble is that it needs a person, and the moment a cat wants to hunt is the moment you are cooking. So this wand clicks into a suction cup on the tiles or the window and springs back when she swats it. It is still a wand with feathers on it, which is why it comes out of the base and goes in the drawer when you leave the house. Gary has his on the kitchen floor and supervises dinner from it.

    What is in the box?

    Can I leave it out while I am at work?

    No, and this is the one thing to take from this page. The base is for the time you are home with your hands full: cooking, a call, the laptop. When you leave the house the wand comes out of the base and the attachment goes in the drawer, because feathers, a cord and a bell chewed by a cat with nobody watching are what a vet sees on a Sunday night.

    The cup stopped sticking. What am I doing wrong?

    Usually the surface. The cup holds on glass, glazed tile and a smooth laminate bench, wiped clean, with the rim wetted before you press and the lever pushed over. It will not hold on textured tile, timber grain, painted walls or carpet, and it loses grip as dust builds under it, so wipe both every few days. If it lets go on clean glass within a week, email us: that is a faulty cup and we replace it.

    Which attachment should I start with?

    Watch how she hunts. The stalker who freezes and creeps gets the bird, which flutters and drops. The cat who comes running at a sound gets the jingle jangle. The leaper gets the helicopter, which spins as it falls. One at a time on the wand, the rest in the drawer, and swap every few days: a cat who has caught the same bird four days running has killed it.

    Are the feathers real? Are they cockatoo?

    Real, and not cockatoo or kookaburra. They are cleaned chicken feathers dyed in the colours of each bird, which the listing's own card says and this page repeats, because nobody should be selling native bird parts and nobody should think we are. Real feathers matter because they move like prey; dyed chicken feathers do that without a bird being harmed for it.

    Is it safe? What are the rules?

    Home and awake while it is out; in the drawer when you leave. Check the attachment after each session and retire it when a feather pulls out or the bell loosens. Take the toy away from a cat who eats feathers rather than shaking them, and tell your vet. Tug the cup before you walk off. A cat who vomits, strains or stops eating after a session in which part of an attachment went missing is a same-day vet visit.

    What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?

    Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours, and a cup that will not hold on clean glass counts. A cat who ignores it has usually not seen it move: two minutes of you on the wand first, then leave it standing, and try a different attachment before you give up.
