  1. 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:03 Anyway, it looks like a flower on top and you've got two holes, a hole on the right and a hole on the left.
  3. 0:10 Again, they can jump on top and kind of climb around it.
  4. 0:13 This one's really good just for them to have a tunnel to go in and out of and play with. But it's also great for anxious cats because they can have a pocket back here to be able to hide inside.

How it works

Why a low house with a roof works for two cats

Illustrated brown and cream cat in a purple collar lying in the den of the grey felt PURRZ™ Petal Paws House, looking up out of its door, the flat light grey roof deck above it empty

A den below, a deck on top

Under the roof is a felt den, 70 cm across and 28 cm high, with two doors, one in the right lobe and one in the left, so it is a tunnel through, and a closed pocket at the back to hide in: a cat lies flat inside with the room in view, or tucks into the pocket out of sight.

  • A flat white deck, the lookoutOn the roof is a flat white deck with a lip round its edge, at footstool height: the lookout.
  • Two cats at once, without sharingTwo cats use it at once without sharing; one cat uses both.

Low, wide and out of the way

Most caves stand tall in the middle of a room.

  • Goes under a coffee tableThis one is 28 cm high, so it goes under a coffee table, along a window wall or at the end of a couch, where a cat wants a den: low, backed onto something, watching the door.
  • Biggest floor of any caveThe 70 cm footprint is the biggest floor of any cave in the range: a big cat stretches out rather than curling.

Felt that studs together and folds flat

It arrives flat-packed at 34 x 22 x 15 cm and about 760 g, and the felt panels stud together without tools; fold it flat again when you move house.

  • Sheds a little at firstFelt sheds a little at first and takes a lint roller after that; there is no cushion to wash unless you add one.
  • Reads as a low tableGrey pleated walls and a white roof: it reads as a low table, not a pet bed.

Three rules for choosing

  • Measure her stretched out, nose to tail base. Under about 55 cm she lies flat inside with room to turn; it is rated for cats under 9 kg. Inside is 28 cm high, so she lies or crouches rather than sits up, and the roof is where she sits.

  • Two cats: one in, one on top, which is the point of a house with a deck. Two cats who both want the den still need one hiding place each plus one, so a second cave is the answer, not a bigger one.

  • Old and stiff cats: the doors are at floor level with no step, and the roof is a 28 cm hop, lower than a couch. A cat who has stopped using a spot she loved is a vet visit before it is a new bed.

How to

How to build it, and where it goes

  • Illustrated man kneeling with a hand on each edge of the studded roof of the grey felt PURRZ™ Petal Paws House, on top of its pleated walls, a brown and cream cat sitting beside it looking up

Stud it together on the floor

Lay the panels out, stand the walls, and close every stud. Check each one by tugging it before the roof goes on; a cat leaning on an open seam opens it.

  • Illustrated brown and cream cat in a purple collar walking alongside the grey felt PURRZ™ Petal Paws House, set low against a cream wall beside a lilac armchair

Put it where she already sleeps low

Under the coffee table, along the window wall, at the end of the couch, with the pocket at the back to a wall and the two doors open to the room.

  • Illustrated man kneeling to tuck a soft cream blanket into the door of the grey felt PURRZ™ Petal Paws House while a brown and cream cat stands at the other side looking up

    Her smell before yours

The blanket she sleeps on now goes inside for the first week. Do not put her in it; most cats find the roof first and the den in their own time.

  • Illustrated man pulling down a lilac roller blind over a window while a brown and cream cat stands on the roof deck of the grey felt PURRZ™ Petal Paws House, looking up

    Out of the summer sun

Felt holds heat, and a low roof holds it close. Move it to the shade when the house warms up; a hot cat will use the deck and leave the den until autumn.

  • Illustrated man kneeling to brush fluff off the pleated walls of the grey felt PURRZ™ Petal Paws House with a grey and purple hand vacuum, a brown and cream cat sitting beside it watching

Lint roller weekly, studs after every clean

Felt sheds a little at first. Roll or vacuum the roof and walls weekly, and re-check every stud after you move or clean it.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Felt sheds a little at first, and a cat who eats the fluff or works at the studs should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet; a stud is metal and a loose one is a swallowing risk. Check every stud is closed after assembly and after each clean, or a seam opens under a cat leaning on it, and check the roof takes her weight before you let her make it hers. It is not for rabbits: rabbits eat felt. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one, and the roof counts as a perch, not a hiding place. Keep it out of the sun in summer; felt holds heat, and a low roof holds it close. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.

Why I designed it

Every cat wants a den and a lookout. This is both, and it fits under the coffee table.

Ask two cats to share a cave and the confident one takes it; the shy one sleeps on the floor.

  • They each get a levelGive them a house with a roof and they each get a level: one inside at a door or tucked in the pocket at the back.
  • One on top, with the viewOne on top with the view, and nobody negotiates.
  • Slides under a coffee tableThe Petal Paws House is that in felt, 70 cm across and 28 cm high, so it slides under a coffee table or along a window wall instead of standing in the middle of the room.
  • A lip for her chinThe roof has a lip round the edge, which a cat rubs her chin on.
  • Gary claims the roofGary has never gone inside and claims the roof as his.

    What is it, exactly?

A low felt house shaped like a five-petal flower, 70 cm across and 28 cm high. Underneath is a felt den with two doors, one in the right lobe and one in the left, so it is a tunnel through, and a closed pocket at the back to hide in; on top is a flat white felt deck with a raised lip round the edge. It arrives flat-packed, the panels stud together without tools, and it folds flat again. Grey walls, a white roof; one size, one colour.

Will my cat fit, and can two cats use it?

Measure her stretched out, nose to tail base. Under about 55 cm she lies flat inside with room to turn; it is rated for cats under 9 kg. Inside is 28 cm high, so she lies rather than sits up. Two cats use it at once by taking a level each, one in and one on top; two cats who both want the den need a second hiding place, not a bigger one.

Will the roof hold a cat?

It is designed as a deck, with a lip round the edge, and a cat lies on it in every picture. Stud it together properly, check the studs after every clean, and watch the first time she gets up.

Is it warm? Is it a summer bed?

Felt holds heat, and a low roof holds it close, so the den is a winter bed. In summer most cats leave the den for the roof deck, which is the open, airy level, and that is fine: keep the house out of the sun and let her choose the level. There are no electrics and none should go in it.

Does it need cleaning, and how?

A lint roller or a hand vacuum over the roof and walls once a week, and a damp cloth on marks. Felt sheds a little in the first weeks and settles. It is not machine washed. There is no cushion inside unless you add one; if you do, wash the cushion the same day you treat for fleas, because the eggs are in the bed, not on the cat.

My cat is shy. Will a den help her settle?

A place to hide is the one thing that reliably helps a shy cat cope with a new house, a new cat or a noisy week: somewhere low, enclosed, with the room in view through a door. This house is that, with a lookout on top for when she is braver. It does not change who she is. A cat who hides more than she used to, or stops eating, is showing you pain or illness: a vet visit first.

What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Put it where she already sleeps low, back to a wall, her blanket inside, and give her two weeks. Most cats find the roof in a day and the den in their own time.
