- 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
- 0:03 Let's go through the Puzzle Pal because this one's the biggest, and I quite like this one.
- 0:08 This one comes with two ostrich feathers. These are actual ostrich feathers, real feathers on top.
- 0:14 So if cats actually eat it, it doesn't really matter. If they ingest the feather part, it's okay.
- 0:20 They are on metal springs because I have to put them on something structural that has a bit of integrity to bounce around and play with.
- 0:27 Don't let the cat eat or chew these metal springs on either side.
- 0:32 You've got a rectangle shape that has all different kinds of holes and pockets for your cat to stick their paw in.
- 0:38 You have one blue bell ball inside to play with so they can hit that around, and it's fun.

How it works
Why the Puzzle Pal works for a cat left alone all day

A hunt that resets itself
A ball on the floor is over in a minute: bat, chase, done.
- A bell ball under a lidPut a bell ball under a lid with holes in it and every swipe sends it somewhere she cannot see, ringing.
- She hears it and starts againShe hears it, reaches through the next hole, and starts again.
- Stalk and pounce, without youHear it, find it, lose it: that loop is the stalk and pounce an indoor cat is short of, and it runs without you.

Paw holes, not a bowl
The lid carries two long arc slots, a cross in the middle and cat-shaped cut-outs around it, and the side walls have holes of their own, so she can work it from above or lying on the floor.
- A paw, not a headThe openings take a paw and a forearm, not a head, and the ball is bigger than the holes, so it stays in and the game stays in the box.

Flat felt, slots together
It arrives as flat felt panels in a bag and slots together with tabs, no tools, in a couple of minutes.
- About 300 g, under the couchDense polyester felt, 36 by 28 cm and 7 cm high, about 300 g, so it slides under the couch when you want the floor back.
- Grey or Cream, for the roomGrey or Cream, and both look like something you chose for the room rather than something the cat dragged in.
Size guide
One size, two colours: will it suit my cat, and what is in the box
Three rules for choosing
-
One box does a one-cat or two-cat house: two cats work opposite sides, which is what the photographs show. A house of three or more wants a second toy of a different kind in another room, not a second box.
-
Kittens can start on it as soon as they are pouncing on things, under supervision, because the feathers and springs are the parts a kitten chews. A stiff older cat can play it lying down with one paw, which is its quiet advantage over a wand.
-
The openings are cut for a paw and a forearm, not a head, and the ball is bigger than the holes so it stays in. If she goes quiet on it after a week, put it in the cupboard for a fortnight and bring it back; rotation is what keeps a puzzle toy alive.

How to
How to set it up so she actually uses it

Slot it together
Tabs into slots, ball inside, lid on last, then fit the two feather springs where the lid takes them. Two minutes, no tools.

Put it where she already is
Beside the sofa or in the sun, not in the spare room. A puzzle toy in a room she never uses is a box in a room she never uses.

Show her the ball once
Roll it so it rings, then walk away. Most cats work it out from the sound; a cat who does not gets a treat dropped in through a hole.

Make it a food puzzle
Drop a few dry biscuits in through the holes and let her fish them out. Dry food only, counted as part of her daily ration, not on top of it.

Rotate it
A week out, a fortnight in the cupboard, back out again. Novelty is most of what a puzzle toy is selling, so keep some in reserve.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
The box and the ball are leave-out parts; the feathers are not. A determined cat strips an ostrich feather, and a swallowed feather shaft, a pulled-off spring or anything like string is the kind of thing that ends in surgery, so look at the feathers each day and take them off the springs once they are chewed down to a stalk. A cat who chews the felt itself rather than pawing at it should have the box taken away: some cats eat fabric, and felt in the gut is an obstruction, not a snack. The ball is hollow plastic with a bell inside; replace it if it cracks. If you use it as a food puzzle, dry food only, counted into her daily ration. A cat who suddenly stops eating, vomits repeatedly or strains in the tray needs a vet the same day, not a new toy.
Why I designed it
The toy that works the nine hours you are not there.
Most of the cats I see for boredom problems are indoor cats with nothing to do between breakfast and the sound of your key.
- Nothing fixes the dayA wand toy fixes the evening; nothing fixes the day. So this is the toy for the hours you are not there.
- For a paw, not a headA felt box with a bell ball rolling inside it and holes cut for a paw, not a head.
- She tries the next holeShe hears it, reaches, it rolls away, she tries the next hole.
- Feathers on springsThe feathers on springs are the moving target for the standing-still moments.
- It packs flatIt packs flat, and it costs less than the sofa arm she would otherwise be working on.

What does a cat actually do with it?
Hears the bell ball roll under the lid, reaches through the nearest hole, bats it, loses it, and moves to the next hole. That loop is the stalk and pounce an indoor cat is short of. In between, the two feathers on springs give her something to swipe at standing up. It is built for a cat on her own, which a wand toy is not.
Is it safe to leave out while I am at work?
The box and the ball are. The feathers are the part to watch: a determined cat strips them, and a swallowed shaft or a pulled-off spring is a surgery risk, so check them daily and take them off once they are chewed to a stalk. A cat who eats felt rather than pawing it loses the box altogether. Nothing on a string, which is deliberate.
Grey or Cream?
Same box, same ball, same feathers. Grey is charcoal felt through and through; Cream is a cream lid on white walls, and it shows dark fur more and light fur less. Cream is sold out at the moment, so the Grey is the one that ships now. The photographs show the Grey; two of them have the Cream beside it.
Can I put food in it?
Yes, dry food only. Drop a few biscuits through the holes and let her fish them out; it slows a fast eater and gives a bored cat a job to do. Count what goes in as part of her daily ration rather than on top of it, and brush the crumbs out afterwards. No wet food and no treats that leave grease: felt does not wash like a bowl.
Will my kitten or my old cat use it?
A kitten will, from the point she is pouncing on things, and she is also the cat most likely to chew the feathers, so supervise early on. An older or arthritic cat can play it lying down, reaching in with one paw, which is the quiet advantage over a wand toy that asks her to leap. Put it where she already spends the day.
How do I clean it, and does it fall apart?
It slots together from flat felt panels with tabs, no tools, and comes apart the same way for cleaning or storage. Brush or vacuum the fur off and wipe it with a damp cloth. Assume it does not survive a washing machine. The felt is dense and takes claws; a cat who is shredding it rather than playing needs a scratcher as well.
What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat who ignores it in week one usually wants a reason: roll the ball so it rings, or drop a treat in through a hole, and give it a fortnight.
