How Many Beds Does a Kitten Need? A Placement Guide

Kitten Bed Placement & Quantity – Vet 2025 Guide Most kittens need at least 2 cozy beds: one for daytime naps, one for nighttime sleep. Place beds in quiet corners, near windows, or inside safe enclosures. Optional portable beds help with travel or vet visits. Match bed type to sleep style: Donut Bed for curlers, a felt house for shy kittens, the 3-In-1 Cave for curious climbers. You’ve just brought home your kitten (or you're counting down the days), and now you’re wondering: How many beds do they actually need? Just one? One per room? Do they even need a bed at all?

This quick guide from a vet breaks down how many beds to buy, where to place them, and how to support your kitten’s natural sleep rhythm from day one.

The Short Answer

Most kittens need at least 2 beds or cozy rest zones in your home — one for daytime naps, and one for nighttime sleep.

Why? Because kittens:

  • Sleep 16–20 hours a day
  • Like to follow the sun and stay near their humans
  • Feel safest when they can choose their rest spot

Ideal Bed Placement for Kittens

1. In a Quiet, Low-Traffic Corner

  • Place their main bed in a bedroom or cozy nook
  • Use a Donut Bed or a felt house for warmth and enclosure

2. Near a Window or Favorite Lounge Spot

  • Kittens love napping in sunlight!
  • Use a Flat Felt Pad or the 3-In-1 Cave (open)

3. Inside a Crate or Safe Enclosure (If Needed)

  • Especially useful for nighttime routines or multi-pet households
  • Add a soft bed + toy + fleece to build a positive space

Optional: A Third “On-the-Go” Bed

If you plan to travel or bring your kitten to the vet, consider a third portable option:

  • Felt Pad for carriers or crates
  • 3-In-1 Cave for overnights or visits

Vet Tip: It’s Not Just Quantity — It’s Type

Each kitten prefers different sleep position. To keep them happy:

  • Curlers love the Donut Bed
  • Shy kittens feel safe in a felt house
  • Curious climbers love the 3-In-1 Cave

From Dr Duncan Houston

“Kittens don’t just need one place to sleep — they need a few safe, scent-filled zones that reflect their natural nap patterns. Beds placed in sunny, quiet, and secure spots help them settle faster and sleep better.”
