- 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
- 0:13 Here I've got the Cloud Nine felt house. So, look, this is a really nice design.
- 0:19 It has a hole at the front, and it also has a hole at the back. They've still got to climb in to be able to get to the hole at the back, but this design is very sturdy.
- 0:29 It's much stronger than some of the other designs, even though it's made from the same material. That's just because it's got a few more, I guess, walls and things for support.
- 0:37 Cats can climb on top of this. They can go inside of it and hide in it.
- 0:40 The other thing is it's made of a synthetic felt material. This is really good for cats to be able to claw, and they can chew it, but I don't want them to eat it, just make sure.
- 0:50 But they can claw this. It's really good for their nails. It's a really good product to be able to scratch.
- 0:56 Very lightweight. You can put it anywhere in the house. It doesn't necessarily have to be up like that; it can be at any angle.
- 1:02 I have had cats play with this and jump in and out of it. I really like all the felt stuff because it's really easy and simple to be able to use them. Cats tend to like them.
- 1:11 Obviously, a cat tree is really good, you know, but they are quite heavy. They're big and bulky, and they do take up quite a fair bit of space.
- 1:18 That's why all these little felt houses are really good. It makes it their space that they go to, and it's not an open space like, you know, cat trees and things where they're open to the house, if you do have an anxious cat.
- 1:30 Hope your cats are happy.

How it works
Why a den with a roof beats an open bed for the cat who hides

A door at the front, an opening at the back, a roof over her
A cat rests properly when nothing can arrive from behind, which is why she is under the bed and not on it.
- A box to hide inIn shelter studies, cats given a box to hide in settled faster than cats without.
- The dome is that boxThe dome is that box: a round door facing the room, a second opening at the back reached from inside, felt walls and a roof, a cushion on the floor.
- Back to a wallBack opening to the wall, door to the room: nothing arrives from behind.

Low and wide, so it lives where she does
A den in the spare room is a den she does not use.
- In the room you live inAt 26 cm high and 72 cm wide it goes along the wall of the room you live in, under a window or at the end of the couch, and reads as a shape rather than pet furniture.
- 40 cm deep, one cat curledThe dome is 40 cm deep, one cat curled; the lobes are where the cats in the pictures sit.

Felt, tabs, no tools, and a lint roller
A lighter grey plate front and back, felt strips wrapped round the outline between them, tabs through the plates to hold it: it comes flat at about 950 g and folds flat again.
- Wiped, not soakedFelt is quiet and warm and holds fur, so the top gets a lint roller weekly and the cushion comes out; the felt is wiped, not soaked.
- Check every tabCheck every tab after assembly and after each clean.

Three rules for choosing
-
Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 40 cm she curls inside the dome on the cushion; over that, the Petal Paws House is the bigger den. At 26 cm high she lies inside rather than sits up, which is how a cat uses a den anyway.
-
One cat inside. The lobes beside the door are where the second cat sits in the photographs; treat them as the shape, not a perch. In a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one.
-
Kittens and old cats: a round door with a low sill suits both, and a kitten's first den is the one she keeps. A cat who has stopped using a bed she loved, or starts hiding more than she used to, is a vet visit before she is a new bed.

How to
How to tab it together, where to put it, and how to keep it grey

Tab it together on the floor
Lay the two plates out, wrap each felt strip round the outline with the creased side inward, and push every tab through its slot. Tug each seam before you let her near it.

Put it where she already sleeps low
Under the window, along the wall, at the end of the couch: the room the people are in, with the back opening to the wall and the door facing the room.

Her smell before yours
The blanket she sleeps on now goes on the cushion for the first week. Do not put her in it; a cat carried into a den leaves it.

Give it two weeks
Most cats sit on a lobe first and go in later, usually when the house is loud. If she has not been in after two weeks, move it to where she hides now and try again.

Lint roller weekly, tabs after every clean
Felt holds fur. Roll or vacuum the top and the strips weekly, wash the cushion with her other bedding, and re-check every tab after you move or clean it.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
Felt sheds a little at first, and a cat who eats the fluff or chews the tabs should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet, because eating things that are not food has causes. Check every seam is closed after assembly and after each clean, or a wall opens under a cat leaning on it, and do not count the lobes as a perch until you have watched them take her weight. It is not for rabbits or guinea pigs: they eat felt. A closed den holds warmth, which is the point in winter and a problem in a summer window, so it moves out of the sun. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.
Why I designed it
A cat hides to rest, not because something is wrong. Give her somewhere that is hers.
Every vet has watched a frightened cat settle the moment she gets into a box.
- Settled faster, ate soonerIn shelter studies, cats given somewhere to hide settled faster and ate sooner than cats without.
- Hiding is not a symptomHiding is not a symptom; it is how a cat rests properly, with a door in front and walls at her back.
- A felt dome with two openingsThe Cloud Nine is that hole built for a living room: a felt dome with a round door at the front and a second opening at the back, reached from inside.
- A cushion and two low lobesA cushion on the floor, with two low lobes beside it.
- It lives along a wallIt is 26 cm high and 72 cm wide, so it lives along a wall rather than in the way.
- Gary sleeps in itGary sleeps in it with one paw out of the door.

How big is it, and will she fit?
It is 72 x 40 x 26 cm. Measure her curled up, nose to tail base: under about 40 cm she curls inside the dome. At 26 cm high she lies rather than sits up, which is how a cat uses a den anyway.
What are the two bumps either side for?
They make it a cloud. The dome in the middle is the den; the lobes are lower rounded sections either side, and in the photographs that is where the second cat sits. Treat them as the shape and not as a perch, and watch them take her weight before she makes one hers.
My cat hides under the bed. Will she use this instead?
Sometimes, and you can improve the odds. Put it where she hides now or as close as the room allows, back to a wall, door facing the room, with the blanket she sleeps on inside. Do not put her in it. Most cats sit on it first and go in when the house is loud. Give it two weeks. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to is a vet visit, not a new bed.
Is felt warm enough, or too warm?
A closed felt den holds a cat's own warmth, with no electrics and nothing to overheat, which is what she wants in winter and most of the year. In summer it moves out of the window: a closed box in full sun is a box she overheats in. If she starts sleeping on top of it rather than inside, that is usually the answer to which season it is.
Does it have a cushion, and can I wash it?
There is a removable cushion inside. The felt itself is wiped, not soaked; it holds water and loses its shape. A lint roller weekly for fur, a damp cloth on marks, and if it needs more it comes apart flat and the panels can be brushed outside.
Is it for rabbits or small pets?
No. Rabbits and guinea pigs eat felt, and a rabbit that has eaten felt is a gut obstruction, which is an emergency. This is a den for one cat, and a kitten from the day she comes home.
What if it arrives damaged or a seam will not close?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Felt panels arrive pressed flat; give them a day standing before you decide a seam is wrong, and tab it together on a hard floor so the plates sit square.
