  1. 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:03 This one's the Clam. I like it because it looks like a clam.
  3. 0:06 Gary hasn't really used this one because he's not really an energetic cat.
  4. 0:10 But this one, same again, made out of felt material. You've got some metal buckles here to be able to clasp these flaps together.
  5. 0:16 More active cats really like this one because it's got holes they can run in and out of.
  6. 0:19 And it's got this kind of central cylinder that they can grab on and spin around on.

How it works

Why the Pearler Cave works for a cat who sleeps under things

Illustrated brown and cream cat in a purple collar lying in a grey felt PURRZ™ Pearler Cave under a cream sofa on wooden legs, looking out of the wide opening

Under, not in

Watch where a cat chooses to sleep when nobody has bought her anything and it is under something: the bed, the couch, a chair.

  • A roof above, a wall behindA roof above, a wall behind, the room in front.
  • A closed cave trades the viewA closed cave with a small door trades the view for the walls, and plenty of cats will not make that trade.
  • Wide openings, facing the roomThe Pearler keeps both: a low roof and more than one wide opening, facing the room.

Room to lie flat

It is 53 cm square inside its felt walls and 23 cm high, so she lies stretched out or on her side with the roof close above her, the way she lies under furniture.

  • Different from every cube and coneThat is the difference from every cube and cone in the range, which are built for a cat curled up.
  • A big cat fitsA big cat fits; it is rated for cats under 9 kg.

Felt, buckles, flat

Felt panels with the shape already cut: fold the flaps over the floor and clasp them together with the metal buckles, no tools, no glue.

  • Undo the buckles, it lies flatUndo the buckles and it lies flat for the lint roller, the vacuum or the suitcase.
  • Quiet under claws, holds its shapeFelt is quiet under claws and holds its shape when she leans on it; it sheds a little at first, which is normal.

Three rules for choosing

  • Measure her stretched out, nose to tail base. Under about 50 cm she lies flat inside with the roof above her; the shell is rated for cats under 9 kg. At 23 cm high she lies or crouches rather than sits up, which is the point of it.

  • Two cats: a shell this size is one cat's spot, even with more than one opening. In a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one, and this counts as one.

  • Kittens: a good first hideaway because it is low and the openings are wide. Check every buckle is clasped, because a kitten works at anything that moves, and the buckles are metal.

How to

How to get a cat to use a new cave

  • Illustrated bearded man in a purple jumper kneeling, one hand on his knee, to fasten a felt tab on top of a grey PURRZ™ Pearler Cave, a brown and cream cat sitting by him looking up

Buckle it together in her room

Felt smells of the bag it shipped in for ten minutes. Clasp the buckles in the room she will use it in and let her supervise.

  • Illustrated brown and cream cat lying in a grey felt PURRZ™ Pearler Cave on the floor at the foot of a cream bed with lilac bedding, looking out of the opening

Put it where she already sleeps under things

Beside the couch she goes under, at the end of the bed, in the corner of the room the household uses. Not the laundry.

  • Illustrated bearded man in a purple jumper kneeling to set a grey felt PURRZ™ Pearler Cave down in front of a cream wall, its opening facing out, a brown and cream cat sitting beside it

    An opening to the room

Turn one opening towards where the household happens so she can watch it.

  • Illustrated bearded man in a purple jumper sliding a cream, lilac-edged blanket with a bone-shaped treat on it into a grey felt PURRZ™ Pearler Cave while a brown and cream cat sniffs at the opening

A treat, then leave it alone

A treat inside, her blanket on the floor of it if she has one, and two weeks before you judge it. Do not put her in it.

  • Illustrated bearded man in a purple jumper running a pink lint roller over a felt panel opened out flat from a grey PURRZ™ Pearler Cave, his other hand stroking a brown and cream cat

    Lay it flat to clean

Once a week, undo the buckles, lint-roll or vacuum the inside, and clasp it back up. Check every buckle is closed.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Felt sheds a little at first, and a cat who eats the fluff or works at the buckles should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet; the buckles are metal and a loose one is a swallowing risk. Check every buckle is clasped after assembly and after each clean, or a flap opens under a cat leaning on it. It is not for rabbits: rabbits eat felt. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one, or the shy cat never gets to use it. Keep it out of the sun in summer; felt holds heat, and a low roof holds it close. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.

Why I designed it

For the cat who sleeps under things, not in them.

Half the cats I know sleep under the bed, under the couch, under a chair: a roof over them, something at their back, and the whole room in front.

  • She declines the cube caveA cube cave asks that cat to give up the view, and she declines.
  • A low felt shellThe Pearler is a low felt shell, 23 cm high and half a metre square, with more than one wide opening.
  • A roof, room to lie flatA roof to be under, with room to lie flat rather than curled.
  • Everything in front of herAnd everything in front of her where she can see it.
  • Buckles together in a minuteIt buckles together in a minute and lies flat again for cleaning.

Is it a cave or a bed?

A low cave. A felt floor, a felt roof curving over it about 23 cm up, and more than one wide opening to go in and out of. She lies inside stretched out or on her side with the roof close above her, the way she lies under the bed, and watches the room through an opening. It is not a bed she sits up in; it is a roof she sleeps under.

How big is it, and will a big cat fit?

Assembled it is 53.5 cm long, 52.5 cm wide and 23 cm high, and it is rated for cats under 9 kg. Measure your cat stretched out, nose to tail base: under about 50 cm she lies flat inside. The openings are wide, so a big cat gets in without folding herself.

    Why is it so low?

Because low is what she chooses. The gap under a bed or a couch is a roof close above her back, and that closeness is the comfort. A tall cave gives her headroom she does not use and takes away the ceiling she wanted. At 23 cm she lies or crouches under it rather than sitting up, and the wide openings keep the room in view.

Is it hard to put together?

It arrives flat at 56.5 by 28.5 by 14 cm with the shape already cut. Fold the flaps over the floor and clasp them together with the metal buckles, no tools. Build it in the room she will use it in, check every buckle is clasped when you finish, and again after each clean. Undo the buckles and it lies flat again.

    How do I clean felt?

Undo the buckles and lay it flat, then vacuum it or run a lint roller over it; a damp cloth for marks. Do not put felt through the washing machine, it loses its shape. It sheds a little fluff in the first weeks, which is normal, and a dark grey felt shows light fur, so a lint roller once a week is the routine.

My cat has started hiding all the time. Will this help?

No, and please do not buy it for that. A cat who suddenly hides more, stops coming out to eat or stops using a favourite spot is showing you pain or illness, and that is a vet visit first. A hiding place is for a healthy cat's normal need to be out of sight sometimes, not a treatment for a cat who has changed.

What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat ignoring it in week one is normal: put it where she already sleeps under things, a treat inside, and two weeks.
