    Cats sleep curled with their back against something and their head on the edge of it, which is why the box beats the cushion every time.

    Three rules for choosing

    • Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 35 cm she curls in the Small; over that, or a cat who sleeps stretched out, the Large. The Small is rated to 5 kg and the Large to 12 kg.

    • Two cats who sleep together take the Large; two who do not take one each, and the rule in a multi-cat house is one bed per cat plus one, or the quiet cat sleeps on the floor.

    • Older and stiff cats: the wall is 23 cm on the Small and 30 cm on the Large, and that is a step for an arthritic cat. If she hesitates at the couch, take the Small and put it where she can step down into it, from a low chair or the bottom stair. A cat who stops using a bed she loved is a vet visit before it is a new bed.

    How to get a cat to use a new bed

      Unpack it and wait a day

      It ships compressed. Take it out of the bag, shake it, and give it a day to loft before you judge the walls.

      Put it where she already sleeps

      The end of the couch, the corner of your bed, the sunny spot at 10 am. Not a new spot; a new bed in her old spot.

      Her smell before yours

      The blanket she sleeps on now goes in the middle for the first week. Do not put her in it.

      Out of the summer sun

      Plush holds heat, which is the point in winter and the problem in January. Move it to the shade when the house warms up.

      Wash it on the schedule

      Every few weeks, and the same day as any flea treatment.

    A plush bed has two things to watch. A cat who chews the plush or pulls the filling out should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet, because swallowed stuffing is an obstruction. And heat: there are no electrics here, so nothing can burn her, but plush holds warmth, and a bed in the summer sun is a bed she overheats in, so it moves to the shade. Wash it the same day you treat for fleas, because the eggs are in the bed, not on the cat. A cat who suddenly sleeps far more than she used to, stops coming out to eat, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one bed per cat plus one. If anything about how she sleeps worries you, ask your vet.

      Why a donut and not a flat cushion?

      Because she does not sleep on flat things by choice. A cat curls with her back against something and her head on the edge of it, which is why she picks the box, the corner of the couch and your jumper over the cushion you bought. A tall wall all the way round gives her that on every side, with a rim for her chin and the room still in view.

      Which size?

      Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 35 cm, the Small, rated to 5 kg. Over that, a cat who sleeps stretched out, or two cats who sleep together: the Large, rated to 12 kg. The Small is 46 x 33 x 23 cm and the Large 62 x 65 x 30 cm.

      Is it heated?

      No, and that is deliberate. There are no electrics, so there is nothing to chew and nothing that can burn her. The plush and the tall wall hold the heat she gives off, the way a duvet does, so a cat curled in it is warmer than one on a flat mat. In summer that cuts the other way: keep it out of the sun.

      Can it go in the washing machine?

      It is machine washable and dryer safe. On a bed that matters more than on anything else you buy a cat: flea eggs live in bedding, so wash it the same day you treat her, and the occasional accident is a cycle, not a replacement.

      Will my older cat get into it?

      The wall is 23 cm on the Small and 30 cm on the Large, which is a step for a cat with stiff hips. If she hesitates at the couch, take the Small and put it where she steps down into it, from a low chair or the bottom stair. A warm, walled bed is exactly what an old cat wants once she is in it; the getting in is the part to plan for.

      My cat has started sleeping all the time. Will this help?

      No, and please do not buy it for that. A cat who suddenly sleeps far more than she used to, stops coming out to eat or stops using a favourite spot is showing you pain or illness, and that is a vet visit first. A good bed is for a healthy cat's normal sixteen hours, not a treatment for a cat who has changed.

      What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?
