  1. 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 This is the Hang & Chill window hammock. You've got two hangers up here with a piece of wire, and then you've got two suction cups down here.
  3. 0:21 These suction cups are twist-on ones, so the more you twist them, it's a bit tighter. The suction on the windows is a bit better.
  4. 0:27 And these ones down here are big, wide suction cups, so they give a bit more stability.
  5. 0:33 I have tried a bunch of different hammocks. This one was actually quite good in terms of, like, I used it on heaps of fosters and cats that I had back in Australia.
  6. 0:41 Haven't used it so much in Hong Kong; I've got a tiny place which has barred windows. This one actually stood the test of time compared to the other ones that I chose.
  7. 0:50 Now I've seen, you know, there are other models online which don't have these wires. These wires do have a plastic coating over the top which covers the metal wire.
  8. 1:01 These are tough, but if your cat's chewing the wires and chewing them quite a lot, I would probably get rid of the product. I wouldn't let them chew the wire because that will damage their teeth over time.
  9. 1:12 If your cat chews everything, we do have a mesh fabric here, so it's nice and airy for most cats.
  10. 1:18 If you're in an area where it is quite cold for cats, you just put something over the top. Again, I don't sell that option because you can just get them so cheap.
  11. 1:26 It's just a piece of fleece material, and you just put a soft bed over the top and it's fine.
  12. 1:31 This is quite light. It's made of PVC piping, so it's just a very easy, sturdy hammock.
  13. 1:39 The reason why I sell this is it stood the test of time with all the fosters that I had. It was still on the window for years; it's not like it was there for a month or two. This one was there for a long time.
  14. 1:51 I did have some other ones that were fabric and different designs and things that probably looked a bit better than this one.
  15. 1:57 My parents liked this one because it was more simple, but with the other ones, the fabric and material just started to get those balls of fabric. It kind of degraded over time. Whereas, again, this was just a solid product.
  16. 2:13 Honestly, that's why I still sell it now. It's just a solid product. It's not very exciting, it's not very fancy.
  17. 2:21 I'll probably adjust things over time, but at the moment, there's nothing wrong with it.
  18. 2:26 Anyway, all good. That's the Hang & Chill cat hammock.

How it works

Why the Window Hammock works for an indoor cat

Illustrated man in a purple jumper pointing to a cat sitting on the black mesh of a PURRZ™ Window Hammock fixed to a window with suction cups, trees and rooftops outside

The high ground, with a view

Cats choose height and sightlines: the fridge, the back of the sofa, the windowsill she does not fit on.

  • A bed at the windowThis puts a bed at the window at the height she would pick, with the glass at her back and the street in front.
  • Somewhere to sit rather than craneThe window is the one thing in an indoor cat's day that changes; a perch makes it somewhere to sit rather than somewhere to crane.

Cups, cables, frame

Four suction cups: two twist-lock cups at the top of the glass carrying plastic-coated metal cables to the frame's outer corners, two big wide cups behind the frame.

  • A PVC tube frameA PVC tube frame holds the mesh flat.
  • A minute, no toolsIt fits in a minute with no tools and comes off without a mark.
  • Clean glass, lock, re-seat monthlyThe cups are the whole system, so the how-to below is about them: clean glass, lock, re-seat monthly, mount it low for the first week.

Mesh in summer, flannel in winter

The bed is an open-weave mesh, so a cat in full sun does not overheat the way she would on a padded bed, and it dries in an hour after a wash.

  • A flannel mat in the boxA flannel mat comes in the box for the months when the sun is the point rather than the problem.
  • The mesh goes in the machineThe mesh comes off the frame and goes in the machine.

Size guide

Medium or Large, and what holds it up

  • Selected
    73 x 60 x 40 cm

    Medium

About 785 gOne cat; most cats

  • Selected

    Large

A cat who sleeps stretched out

  • One cat per hammock. The Medium takes most cats curled up or sitting; the Large is for a cat who sleeps stretched out, and its dimensions have not been published, so it is not sold on this page until they are.

  • The cups, not the cat, are the limit. The maker's rating is being confirmed (the listing says 15 kg in one place and 18 kg in another); a cat landing on it from a jump loads it harder than her weight, so the rule is clean glass, locked cups, re-seated monthly, and mounted low for the first week.

  • The window: one that stays shut, or one with a fixed screen. Never above an open window. A cat who stops jumping up to it, or comes down stiffly, is a vet visit: cats hide sore joints by giving up the high places.

How to

How to fit a window hammock so it stays up

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper wiping the window glass with a cloth before the PURRZ™ Window Hammock goes up, a cat at his feet looking up

    Clean the glass first

Alcohol or glass cleaner, then dry. Cups hold on clean, flat glass and slide off dust and condensation.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper kneeling beside a PURRZ™ Window Hammock fixed low on the window, a cat sitting on its mesh

Mount it low for the first week

Sill height, where a slip is a hop. Twist the top cups to lock and press the wide cups flat; you should not be able to pull any of them off by hand.

  • Illustrated cat asleep on the black mesh of a PURRZ™ Window Hammock fixed to the window, a treat on the mesh beside her

    Let her find it

A treat on the mesh, then leave it. Most cats are on it within a day because it is at the window; do not lift her onto it.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper holding the frame of a PURRZ™ Window Hammock refitted higher up the window, a cat sitting on the floor looking up

Move it up once you trust it

To the height she sits at anyway. Check all four cups again after the move: twist the top cups, press the wide cups flat.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper cleaning the window glass with a spray bottle and a cloth, a cat sitting by the window watching

    Re-seat the cups monthly

Pull the frame, clean the glass, twist the top cups to lock and press the wide cups flat again. Also after a hot week, because heat softens the cups, and whenever the mesh comes off for a wash.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Suction cups fail slowly and then all at once, usually in heat or on dirty glass, so the schedule above is not optional: clean, lock, re-seat monthly, and mount it low until you have watched her jump on and off it a few times. Never hang it on a window that opens without a fixed screen; I treat cats who fell from windows and it does not take a high floor. Shade the glass in summer; a cat asleep in full sun through glass can overheat, and the mesh helps but does not fix that. A cat who chews the cables or the cups loses the hammock until she stops. A cat who stops jumping up to a spot she loved, or comes down stiffly, is a vet visit: cats do not limp with sore joints, they stop climbing. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.

Why I chose it

The best seat in the house is the one she cannot reach.

An indoor cat spends her day at the window if you let her, because the window is the only thing in the flat that changes. Birds, weather, a leaf. It is the closest thing to a hunt a cat on the ninth floor gets, and the cats I see for boredom are nearly always cats with no view. So: a perch on the glass, at the height she would choose. Two things from the emergency room. Suction cups are a habit, not a fixing: clean the glass, lock the cups, re-seat them every month. And a window that opens gets a screen, always. The foster cats I kept in Australia had this one on their window.

    • The quality surpassed my expectations. Installation was simple, and the hammock holds my larger cat comfortably without any concerns.

    • My cat can finally see the birds up close again, and the sunlight is only partially shining through, so it's not too hot, just warm – my cat loves that! Plus, being up there avoids the dogs bothering her.

    Delivery
Tracked, worldwide. International orders may attract duties.
    Returns
Faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered within 7 days of delivery. Email hello@purrz.com to start.
    Will the suction cups hold?

On clean, dry, flat glass, locked properly, yes. They fail on dusty glass, on textured or frosted glass, and in heat, and they fail slowly, so the rule is a habit: clean the glass before you fit it, twist the top cups to lock and press the wide cups flat until you cannot pull any of them off, mount it low for the first week, and re-seat all four every month and after a hot spell. The maker's weight rating is being confirmed, because the listing gives two figures.

    Medium or Large?

Medium for one cat curled or sitting, which is most cats. Large for a cat who sleeps stretched out. The Large is sold out today and its dimensions have never been published, so this page sells the Medium and lists the Large as it is; when it is back with a measurement, the guide will say who it fits.

Can I put it on a window that opens?

Only if the window has a fixed screen. A cat on a perch beside an open window is a cat who will go out of it after a bird, and it does not take a high floor to hurt her. On a window that stays shut, mount it wherever she already sits.

Will she overheat in the sun?

Less than on a padded bed, because the mesh lets air through underneath, but a cat asleep in full sun through glass can still get too hot. Shade the glass or move the perch to a window that gets morning sun in summer. The flannel mat is for winter, when the sun is the point.

    How do I wash it?

The mesh comes off the frame and goes in the machine on cold; it dries in an hour. Wipe the frame. Then clean the glass and re-seat the cups, because taking the frame down is the moment to do it.

Is it suitable for a kitten or an old cat?

A kitten, yes, mounted low at first, with the window shut or screened. An old cat is the one to watch: mount it where she can step on from a chair rather than jump, and if she stops going up to a place she loved, that is sore joints until a vet says otherwise.

What if it arrives damaged or the cups will not stick?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Cups that will not hold on clean flat glass are a fault; cups on frosted glass are a glass problem.
