Why this tower

  • Designed by Dr Duncan Houston
  • Tested by Gary
  • 120 cm, felt and wood
  • A scratch ramp for a front door

How it works

Why a hide at height with a scratch ramp beats a tower with steps

Illustrated cat resting its front paws on the sill of the square door of the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket with three wooden fins, looking out from the platform behind the door with the sisal ramp hooked below it

A high place of her own

Cats sleep and watch from height because height is safety: nothing comes from behind, everything is in view, and nothing bigger than her can follow.

  • How you cut the fightingIn a two-cat house, a high place each is how you cut the fighting.
  • That place inside a rocketThe Starship puts that place inside a rocket: up the ramp, through the door, onto the platform, with the room below her and a porthole to watch it through.
Illustrated cat stretched up on its hind legs with both front paws dug into the sisal ramp of the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket with wooden fins, the ramp hooked to the open square door above

The front door is a scratching post

Cats scratch to stretch their back and shoulders and to mark, and they do it on the way to somewhere, which is why the arm of the sofa gets it.

  • A sisal ramp at the entranceA ramp faced in sisal at the entrance makes every trip inside a full-body stretch on the right surface, and the ramp takes the marking the sofa used to.
  • The most used partIt will be the most used part of the tower.
Illustrated man in a purple jumper and dark trousers kneeling with one hand on the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket with wooden fins and a sisal ramp, a flat cardboard box on the floor and a cat sitting beside him

Felt and wood, flat in a box

Compressed felt panels clip together into the shell, the wooden fins slot on and the ramp hooks to the door; no tools.

  • It packs to about 3.7 kgIt packs to 62.5 x 55.5 x 15.5 cm and about 3.7 kg.
  • It goes against a wallA tall felt tower stands on its own footprint, so it goes against a wall.

Three rules for choosing

  • One cat at a time inside. The door and the platform are sized for a cat, not two, and a single high place in a multi-cat house is a thing to fight over; the second cat gets the Burj Cat-lifa Tower, the Window Hammock or a perch of her own.

  • A big cat: watch that she gets through the door and can turn round on the platform; a cat over about 6 kg is the one to watch.

  • Kittens and old cats: a kitten uses the ramp before she can jump the height, which is the point of it. An old cat with stiff hips may not manage the slope, and a cat who stops climbing to a place she loved is a vet visit before she is a new tower.

How to

How to build it, where to put it, and how to keep it white

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper and dark trousers kneeling to slot a wooden fin onto the base of the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket, the sisal ramp lying flat on the floor and a cat sitting and watching

Build it on a hard floor

Clip the felt panels into the shell where the seams sit flat, then the fins, then hook the ramp to the door. Give the felt a day standing up before you judge a seam.

  • Illustrated cat walking past a beige armchair toward the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket with wooden fins, its sisal ramp running down from the square door into the room

    Put it against a wall

Back to a wall, ramp into the room, somewhere she already climbs: beside the couch, near the window. Not in a doorway or a run.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper and dark trousers crouching to dangle a feather wand through the square door of the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket, as a cat climbs the sisal ramp toward it

    Let her find the ramp

Drag a wand up the ramp and through the door once or twice. Do not put her inside; a cat carried into a hide leaves it.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper and dark trousers standing with one hand pressing the top of the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket, the other re-seating a clip on a seam, a cat at his feet looking up

Check it after the first week

Push the top: a tall felt shell loosens a little as the clips settle. Re-seat any clip that has moved and check the ramp hook.

  • Illustrated man in a purple jumper and dark trousers crouching to lint-roll the felt shell of the Catstronaut Starship, the white PURRZ™ felt rocket, a bristle brush on the floor beside the fluffed sisal ramp and a cat sitting next to him

    Lint roller monthly, ramp brushed

Felt holds fur; a lint roller keeps it white. Brush the sisal when it fluffs, and a ramp scratched through is the ramp doing its job.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

A 120 cm felt tower stands on its own footprint, so it goes against a wall and not where a running cat can hit it side-on; check the clips after the first week and after any move, because a loosened panel is a tower that folds with a cat in it. One cat inside at a time; two cats in one hide with one door is a fight, and in a multi-cat house each cat needs a high place of her own. A cat who eats felt or sisal fibre rather than scratching it should lose access, and the habit should be mentioned to your vet, because eating things that are not food has causes. A cat who stops climbing to a place she loved, hesitates on the ramp or lands badly is a vet check for her joints before she is a new tower; giving up height is one of the earliest signs of arthritis in cats, and it is common and manageable. Keep the tower away from open windows and balcony rails: height indoors is safety, height beside an opening is a fall. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.

Why I designed it

Height is not a luxury for a cat. It is where she relaxes.

Ask a cat where she wants to be in a busy room: the fridge, the back of the couch, the shelf you did not clear for her.

  • Nothing behind, everything in viewHeight means nothing arrives from behind and everything is in view, and a cat with a high place picks fewer fights in a two-cat house.
  • A rocket with a hideThe Starship is that place: a 120 cm rocket with a hide behind the door.
  • The climb up is the scratchAnd a sisal ramp for a front door, so the climb up is the scratch she was going to do on your sofa.
  • Felt and woodFelt and wood, so it can live in the living room.
  • Gary sits in the doorGary sits in the door like a bus driver.

How tall is it, and how much room does it need?

It is 120 cm tall. The footprint is the body plus the ramp out the front, so allow a wall behind it and about a metre in front.

What is inside? Is it really multi-level?

A platform behind the door, at the top of the ramp, where she sits with the room below her and a porthole to watch it through. What the photographs settle: one door, one ramp, a hide at height.

Is a felt tower stable enough for a big cat?

It stands on its own footprint, like every free-standing tower, so it goes against a wall and not in a run where a cat hits it side-on. Check the clips after the first week and after any move.

Why a ramp instead of steps or a jump?

Because the ramp is the scratching post. Cats scratch to stretch and to mark, and they do it on the way to somewhere, which is why the arm of the sofa gets it. A sisal ramp for a front door turns every trip inside into a full-body stretch on the right surface. It also lets a kitten, or an older cat who no longer jumps the height, get up there at all.

Two cats: can they share it?

Not at the same time. One door and one platform is one cat, and a single high place in a two-cat house is a thing to fight over. Give the second cat a high place of her own: the Burj Cat-lifa Tower, the Window Hammock or the top deck of the Al-Cat-Raz Cave. Height is how you reduce fighting between cats, but only when there is enough of it to go round.

    How do I clean felt?

A lint roller for fur, a damp cloth for marks, and let it dry with the door open. It is not machine washable and it does not want soaking; felt holds water and loses its shape. Brush the sisal on the ramp when it fluffs up. A ramp scratched through is the ramp doing its job; a replacement ramp is not sold on its own.

What if it arrives damaged or a panel does not clip?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Felt panels arrive pressed flat; give them a day standing up before you decide a seam is wrong, and build it on a hard floor so the clips seat square.
