How it works

A short wand keeps the feather within a metre of a person, and a cat who is not hungry reads that as a game with a human, not a hunt.

Long grey plumes move on almost nothing: a turn of the wrist and they drift, lift and settle like a bird that has not seen her.

Most cats respond to silvervine, including many that shrug at catnip.
Set guide
Any cat who chases feathers. The long rod is the difference for the leaper, and for the cat who has gone cold on a short wand because the human is too close to the prey. For a timid cat, start with the rod collapsed and the plumes on the floor, and extend it as she commits.
One attachment on the rod, two in the drawer. Rotate them: the smell of a fresh stick and an unwrecked plume restarts a cat who has learned the old one. Retire a stick once she has chewed it to splinters.
Play to a finish: two or three short hunts of a few minutes each, ending with a catch and a chew of the stick, then the rod collapses and goes away. A cat who stops leaping for a toy she loved, or lands badly, is a vet check for her joints before she is a new toy.

How to

Hand tight on the thread. Extend the rod a section at a time and check each is locked before the first swing.

Sweep the plumes across the floor, stop, twitch, drop them behind something. Prey hides and darts; it does not hover in her face.

The rod is for distance: work the far side of the room and up the back of the couch, and let her plan the leap.

Every few runs, let her catch it. She will grab the stick, rub it and chew. That is what the silvervine is for, and how a proper hunt ends.

After every session: collapse the rod, unscrew a damaged attachment, and put the lot in a drawer. Feathers, a bell and a chewable stick do not stay out.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
This is a wand toy and the rule for wand toys applies: it is for play while someone is home, and it goes in the drawer, collapsed, after every session, because a cat left alone with feathers, a bell and a chewable stick will eat them, and a swallowed quill, bell or splinter is a vet visit, sometimes a surgical one. She is meant to bite the silvervine stick; retire a stick once it splinters, and take the whole toy away from a cat who eats feathers rather than shaking them, because eating things that are not food has causes a vet should hear about. Silvervine is safe for cats: the response is a few minutes of rolling and rubbing and then nothing, and a cat who does not respond at all is normal, not broken. Keep the extended rod away from eyes, hers and a child's. If she vomits, strains or stops eating in the day or two after a session and you cannot find all of an attachment, that is a same-day vet visit.
Why I designed it
Watch a cat lose interest in a wand: the feather is a hand's length from a human, and she knows it.

FAQ
Ostrich. The long grey plumes are ostrich feathers; the name says emu because the range carries an Australian theme across the PURRZ™ cat toys, and they look the part. The short black feathers at the base are chicken, cleaned and sterilised before they are tied. A good hunter will wreck them, which is why there are three.
It is telescopic: it collapses to fit a 51 cm box and extends in sections. Long enough that the plumes work the far side of a living room while you sit on the couch, which is the point of it.
Silvervine is the wood of a climbing plant from the mountains of Japan and China, and cats respond to it the way most respond to catnip: rolling, rubbing, drooling, chewing, for a few minutes, then a rest. Most cats respond to it, including many that ignore catnip. It is safe, and the wood is meant to be chewed. Retire a stick once she has splintered it, and expect no response from some cats, which is normal.
Yes, through the ring. The three plume attachments screw straight onto the threaded tip. Unscrew one and screw the ring adapter on instead, and the loop attachments from the bird, jingle jangle and helicopter packs hang from it, as does any string toy she already likes. The ring is small, so it lives in the drawer with the spare attachments, not on the floor.
No. A wand toy is for play with a person in the room, and this one collapses so it goes in a drawer afterwards. Left out, the plumes get eaten, the bell comes off and the stick gets chewed to splinters with nobody watching, and any of those can become a vet visit. For a cat who is home alone, the Boulder and the Puzzle Pal are built to be left out; this is not.
Often, for two reasons. The rod puts the prey out in the room instead of in your hand, and a cat who reads a short wand as a game with a human reads a plume drifting behind the armchair as something to stalk. And the catch is silvervine, so winning is worth something. Move it like prey: sweep, stop, twitch, hide. A cat who has stopped playing altogether is a vet check first.
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Feathers pulled out by a cat who caught the attachment are the toy working, not a fault: move to the next attachment. Three come in the box because a good hunter wrecks feathers.
