Vet designed
Designed by emergency vet Dr Duncan Houston. Tested at home by Gary, a Ragdoll who has killed four of the six and asked for the wand by name.
How it works

The wand is 60 cm of coated steel wire on a wooden handle, and the wire is the point.

The bird is a cluster of feathers on a bead that flutters and glides.

A feather toy that lasts forever is a feather toy the cat never caught.

Wand about 60 cm
Any cat who chases feathers, and the first wand for a kitten: the wire keeps the prey away from your hand, which teaches her to hunt the toy and not your fingers. For a timid cat, start with the attachment on the floor and move it a little; the leaps come later.
One attachment on the wand, five in the drawer. Rotate the styles: a new one restarts a cat who has learned the old one, and a cat who hunts by ear gets the jingle jangle on a dim evening.
Play to a finish: two or three short hunts of a few minutes each, ending with a catch, then the wand goes away. A cat who stops leaping for a toy she loved, or lands badly, is a vet check for her joints before she is a new toy.

How to

Open the clip ring, hook it through the loop at the tip of the wand and close it. Tug it once; a clip that opens mid-swing is an attachment across the room.

Sweep it along the floor, stop, twitch, drag it behind the couch, let it flutter up and drop. Prey hides and darts; it does not swing back and forth in front of her face.

Small flicks of the wrist, not big arm swings. The wire does the work: the tip whips and springs back and the feathers move like something alive.

Every few runs, let her catch it and hold it. A hunt that never ends in a catch is frustration, not play. Then the next run.

Feathers, string, bells and a wire are not things to leave out with a cat. Unclip a damaged attachment, put the wand away, and rotate to a fresh style next time.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
This is a wand toy and the rule for wand toys applies: it is for play while someone is home, and it goes in the drawer after every session, because a cat left alone with feathers, a string and a bell will eat them, and a swallowed string is a surgical emergency. The feathers pull out under a good catch and the bells are small: retire an attachment when a feather goes or a bell loosens, and take the whole toy away from a cat who eats feathers rather than shaking them, because eating things that are not food has causes and a vet should hear about it. The wire whips: keep the tip away from eyes, hers and a child's, and play with the wand pointed at the floor, not at her face. If she vomits, strains or stops eating in the day or two after a play session and you cannot find all of an attachment, that is a same-day vet visit.
Why I designed it
Most wand toys fail in one of two ways: the stick is rigid, so the feather moves like a feather on a stick, or the one attachment is shredded in a fortnight and the wand goes in a cupboard.

FAQ
One wand and six attachments in the style you pick: two birds, two jingle jangles with bells, and two helicopter spinners. The wand is about 60 cm of coated steel wire on a wooden handle, with a loop at the tip that the attachments' clip rings hook onto. Pick Cockatoo Chaos for white feathers with yellow strands or Kookaburra Craze for brown barred ones; the attachments are otherwise the same.
No, and they should not be: both are protected native birds in Australia and their feathers cannot be sold. The feathers are natural. The names are the colours: white with yellow, or brown and barred.
To her, movement and contrast matter more than colour. White feathers show up on a dark floor and in the half-light of the evening, when most indoor cats want to hunt; brown barred feathers show up on pale carpet in daylight. Pick the one that contrasts with your floor. If you have both floors, the refill packs come in both, and either clips to this wand.
Two reasons. A cat learns a toy in about a week, and a new style restarts the hunt: the bird glides, the jingle jangle rings, the helicopter spins as it falls. And a good hunter wrecks feathers, which is the point of a feather toy; an attachment that lasts forever is one the cat never caught. Six means one on the wand, five in the drawer, and the wand is never retired because the feathers are.
Yes. Every PURRZ™ attachment pack, bird, jingle jangle and helicopter, in both styles, ends in the same clip ring, and it hooks to the loop at the tip of this wand. They also hang from the Emu Feather Toy Set's ring adapter and the Feather Toy Suction Cup Set's wand, so one drawer of refills serves every wand in the house.
No. A wand toy is for play with a person in the room, and it goes in the drawer afterwards, every time. Left out, the feathers get eaten, a bell comes off and the string gets swallowed, and a swallowed string is a surgical emergency, not a wait-and-see. For a cat who is home alone, the Boulder and the Puzzle Pal are built to be left out; this is not.
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Feathers pulled out by a cat who caught the attachment are the toy working, not a fault: clip on the next one. Six come in the box because that is what happens to feathers.
