Vet designed
Designed by emergency vet Dr Duncan Houston. Tested at home by Gary, a Ragdoll who walked away from three scented litters before this one.
How it works

Cassava starch swells and binds when it is wet, so each visit leaves a firm clump you lift out whole.

Cats reject scented litter more often than owners believe, and a cat who avoids her tray does not stop urinating; she moves.

Plant litter is sold as flushable, including on this bag, and I am asking you not to.

48 x 26 x 15 cm carton

One tray per cat plus one, filled 8 to 10 cm deep, in a quiet spot away from food and water. A cat with a choice of clean trays uses a tray; a cat with one dirty tray uses the bath mat.
How long 15 kg lasts depends on the cat, the tray and how often you scoop. Buy for one cat and see. A multi-cat house goes through it in weeks.
Kittens: fine from weaning, with a shallow tray and a watch for eating it, which kittens do with any litter and should stop by a few months old. Seniors: a low-sided tray; the litter is light on old paws and easy to dig.

How to

A third new litter over two-thirds old for a few days, then half, then all new. A cat who finds a strange tray uses the floor beside it.

Deep enough to dig and bury in. Shallow trays clump to the base and get scraped.

Clumps out into a bag, into the bin. Twice a day is when the tray stays clean enough for a fussy cat and when you notice a change.

Two to four urine clumps a day is usual. More, bigger, none, or blood, is a vet visit; straining with nothing is an emergency.

Tip the lot into the bin, wash the tray with hot water and unscented soap, dry it, refill. No bleach or pine cleaner; cats hate both.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
A change in the tray is the earliest warning you will get. A cat, especially a male, who strains in the tray and produces nothing, cries, or keeps going back is an emergency tonight, not tomorrow; a blocked bladder kills in a day or two. More clumps, bigger clumps, urine outside the tray or blood in it is a vet visit this week. A kitten who eats litter is normal for a while and should be watched; an adult who eats it has a reason, and starch litter swells in the gut, so that is a vet visit too. Do not flush used litter, however the bag is printed: cat faeces can carry Toxoplasma, which water treatment does not reliably remove, and it does not belong on a vegetable garden either. Anyone pregnant or immune-suppressed should have someone else scoop, or wear gloves and scoop daily, because the parasite takes a day or more to become infectious after it is passed. If anything in the tray worries you, call your vet.
Why I designed it
Many of the cats I see in emergency with a blocked bladder, or kidneys that have quietly failed, could have been caught weeks earlier by someone looking at the tray.

Finally found an environmentally responsible litter without compromising performance. The plant based formula clumps remarkably well and controls odor naturally.
My cat has mild respiratory sensitivity and the dramatic reduction in dust compared to clay litter has been noticeable. Clumps are solid and easy to remove. The 33lb bag is excellent value for a multi-cat household.
FAQ
It is made from cassava starch and green tea leaves with soy pulp, and the tea leaves are what gives it the flecks and the smell.
Please do not, whatever the bag says. Cat faeces can carry Toxoplasma, a parasite that water treatment does not reliably remove and that harms marine life and people; water authorities in several countries ask you not to flush litter for that reason. Starch litter also swells, which is how it clumps and how it blocks a pipe. Scoop into a bag and into the bin. If anyone at home is pregnant or immune-suppressed, ask your vet how to scoop safely.
No litter is food, and this page will not tell you one is. A kitten tasting litter is normal for a few weeks and should be watched. An adult cat eating litter has a reason, anaemia and pica among them, and this litter swells when it is wet, so eating it is a vet visit rather than a shrug. What is true is that it contains no clay and no fragrance. If your cat is eating it, see your vet.
It depends on the cat, the tray depth and how often you scoop. Fifteen kilos is six bags, which for one cat is months and for three cats is weeks. Buy one carton and see.
Most do, because it is unscented and fine underfoot, which are the two things cats object to in a new litter. Change over gradually: a third new over two-thirds old for a few days, then half, then all. A cat who refuses a new litter is not being difficult; she is telling you about the texture or the smell, and a gradual change usually gets past it.
Sometimes, if the old litter was scented or the tray was dirty, but check the cat first. Urine outside the tray, straining, crying in the tray or blood is a vet visit, and a male cat straining with nothing coming out is an emergency tonight. Once she is well: one tray per cat plus one, unscented litter, scooped twice a day, in a quiet spot. If it carries on once she is well, ask your vet before you change anything else.
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; a split bag or a wrong item is covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat who will not use it in the first days usually needs the gradual changeover in FAQ 5; give it two weeks before you judge it.
