- 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
- 0:13 All right. At the moment, I've got the little avocado felt house. Well, it's not actually too little, but it's quite cool. I think this is a really cool design.
- 0:21 You have one hole for them to get in and out.
- 0:23 But the little seed on here, I have the design of, you know, nice little cat shapes for them to be able to get in and play with this ball. You can move this. This does come in and out if you want to.
- 0:35 And you can put the holes on the inside so the cat can play from inside and bat the ball around. Or you can have it on top like this.
- 0:42 It is strong enough that a cat can sit on top as well as inside of it.
- 0:47 Sometimes I put it like this and then the cats get in and jump around; it kind of rocks. You can have two cats play around and jump on it.
- 0:54 Otherwise, you just sit it on its side, whatever you want to do with this. I really like this. I think it's a great product.
- 0:59 And it's made out of synthetic felt material. Cats really like to claw it and chew on it. Make sure they don't eat it, though.
- 1:07 This material is very popular with cats. For me, this design has done very well.
- 1:12 So, yeah, cute little design you can put in your house. Cats love to hide away in it. They can claw and scratch it all day long, or they can rock around and play in it.
- 1:20 The avocado house. That's right.

How it works
Why the Avo-Cat-O House works for an indoor cat

The seed is the toy
On the cream deck sits a brown felt disc, the seed, with cat-shaped holes, and under it lives a bell ball. The seed lifts out and sits either way up: holes up for play from the deck, or holes down into the den for play from inside.
- Swats through the holesShe swats at it through the holes lying on the roof, or reaches up from inside the den, and it rattles and moves.
- Two loose balls for the floorThe two loose balls are for the floor.
- A bed she keeps usingA bed she plays in is a bed she keeps using.

A den below, a deck on top
Under the deck is an enclosed felt den, 55 by 34 cm and 26 cm high, with one wide door in the front wall and a closed back, so she curls up out of sight with the room in front of her.
- A flat deck above thingsOn top is a flat deck she lies on when she wants to be above things.
- Two cats take one eachOne cat uses both in a day; two cats take one each.

Felt, tabbed, flat-packed
Green polyester felt walls, a cream felt deck and a brown felt seed, held together by tabs through slots, no tools.
- Arrives flat, about 740 g builtIt arrives flat at 46 by 34.5 by 9 cm and weighs about 740 g built.
- Quiet under claws, vacuums cleanFelt is warm, quiet under claws and holds its shape; it sheds a little at first, lint-rolls or vacuums clean through the wide door, and comes apart the way it went together.

Three rules for choosing
-
Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 40 cm she curls up inside; the deck on top takes an adult cat lying down, which the photographs show.
-
Two cats: one on the deck and one inside works when they are friends; the seed is where the two of them meet, one paw from above and one from below. In a multi-cat house the rule is one hiding place per cat plus one, and this counts as one.
-
Kittens: the inside is a good first hideaway because it is low and the door is wide, and the seed gives a kitten something to do in bed. Check the tabs are seated and the loose balls are whole, because a kitten chews anything that moves.

How to
How to get a cat to use a new house

Build it out of the bag
Felt smells of the bag it shipped in for ten minutes. Tab it together in the room she will use it in, seed last, and let her supervise.

Put it where she already hides
Beside the sofa, in the corner she retreats to, near where she sleeps now. Not the laundry.

Door to the room, back to the wall
Turn the wide door towards where the household happens so she can watch it, and put the closed back against a wall.

Rattle the seed once
Roll the bell ball under the seed with a finger so it rings, drop the two loose balls inside, and leave her to it. Two weeks before you judge it. Do not put her in it.

Vacuum through the door
Once a week, reach in through the door and lint-roll the deck. Hair and felt fluff collect in the corners; take it apart for a proper clean.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
Felt sheds a little at first, and a cat who eats the fluff or chews the tabs should have it taken away and the habit mentioned to your vet. Check the tabs are seated after assembly and after every clean, or a wall opens under a cat leaning on it. The bell ball under the seed and the two loose balls are hollow plastic: a cracked one goes in the bin, because the bell and the shards are small enough to swallow. There is no weight rating for the deck; a heavy cat on it bows the felt, which is a squashed house rather than an injury. A cat who starts hiding more than she used to, stops coming out for food, or stops using a spot she loved is telling you something is wrong: hiding is how cats show pain and illness, and it is a vet visit before it is a new bed. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one, or the shy cat never gets to use it. Keep it out of the sun in summer; felt holds heat. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.
Why I designed it
The den with the toy built into the roof.
Cats play where they sleep, so this den has the toy in the roof.
- The seed she swats atThe seed is a felt disc with cut-outs over a bell ball, and she swats at it lying on the deck or reaching up from inside.
- Two loose balls for the floorTwo loose balls come in the box for the floor.
- A proper den under the deckUnder the deck is a proper den, one wide door and a closed back.
- Funnier than a boxIt looks like an avocado because that is funnier than a box, and a house that makes you smile stays in the living room where she wants to be.
- Gary sleeps on the roofGary sleeps on the roof with a paw on the seed.

Willow absolutely loves this! It’s the perfect size for curling up inside, and the green design looks really modern and stylish in my living room. The material feels sturdy but soft enough for a cozy nap. It’s quickly become her favorite spot to hide and relax.

Is it a bed or a toy?
Both, which is the point. Under the deck is an enclosed felt den with one wide door and a closed back, where she curls up out of sight. On top is a flat deck she lies on, and set into it is the seed: a felt disc with cut-outs over a bell ball she can swat from above or reach up at from inside. Two loose balls come in the box for the floor.
How big is it, and will a big cat fit?
Assembled it is 55 cm long, 34 cm deep and 26 cm high. Measure your cat curled up, nose to tail base: under about 40 cm she curls inside. The deck takes an adult cat lying down, which the photographs show. There is no weight rating for the deck.
Can she get the bell ball out?
Not while the seed is seated. The ball sits under the seed disc and the cut-outs are for a paw, not the ball, so it rattles and rolls and stays put. That is what keeps the game going; a ball she can remove is a ball under the fridge by lunchtime. The seed itself lifts out and sits either way up: cut-outs up for play from the deck, or cut-outs down into the den for play from inside. The two loose balls are the ones for carrying off.
Is it hard to put together?
It arrives flat at 46 by 34.5 by 9 cm and tabs together, no tools: felt tabs through slots along the walls and the deck, the seed last. Build it in the room she will use it in, check the tabs are seated when you finish, and again after each clean. It comes apart the same way.
How do I clean felt?
Vacuum it or run a lint roller over it, reaching in through the wide door; the deck lint-rolls in a minute. A damp cloth for marks. For a proper clean, take it apart and do the panels flat. Do not put felt through the washing machine, it loses its shape. It sheds a little fluff in the first weeks, which is normal.
My cat has started hiding all the time. Will this help?
No, and please do not buy it for that. A cat who suddenly hides more, stops coming out to eat or stops using a favourite spot is showing you pain or illness, and that is a vet visit first. A hiding place is for a healthy cat's normal need to be out of sight sometimes, not a treatment for a cat who has changed.
What if it arrives damaged or my cat ignores it?
Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A cat ignoring it in week one is normal: the right spot, the seed rattled once, a treat inside, and two weeks.
