  1. 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:03 Now, here we go. This is the Catfluencer House.
  3. 0:06 I like this one because it's like a camera, and it's got cardboard on the top and on the sides, so it's a bit stronger than the others.
  4. 0:15 You do have to put it together with these plastic screws that screw in through the felt and then into the cardboard, but it makes a cool little camera.
  5. 0:23 On the back, you've got like a fish and a paw hole. There are no holes on either side because it's cardboard, so there's only one way in and one way out.
  6. 0:31 This one is a little smaller than the other ones. I might make a bigger one in the future, but this is like a nice little camera Catfluencer House.

How it works

Why a den with the scratcher on the roof beats a post in the hall

Illustrated cat on the roof of the Catfluencer Cave with her front claws dug into the corrugated cardboard top, the dark grey felt front plate with its round lens door below her

The roof is the scratching post

Cats scratch when they wake, beside where they slept, because the scratch is the stretch and the scent mark together.

  • The roof of her own denA post across the room misses that; the roof of her own den does not.
  • Flat corrugated cardboard on topThe top is stacked corrugated cardboard, flat, the surface most cats choose when offered several, and a cat who never took to a post often works a flat one. Shreds mean it is used.
Illustrated Catfluencer Cave from the front, a cat lying inside with her head and paws in the round lens door of the dark grey felt plate, the flash hole and three slits beside it

One round door, one cat, and a lens she will sit in

Inside, a box 24 cm high with felt at the front and back and cardboard walls: a den for one cat, curled.

  • A round door at floor levelThe door is round and at floor level, the most interesting hole in any room, and the fish and the paw cut out of the back let light in and give her a second view.
  • She will sit in the lensShe will sit in the lens. That is not an accident.
Illustrated woman crouching and lint-rolling the felt front plate of the Catfluencer Cave, a handheld vacuum beside her and cardboard shreds on the roof and the floor, a cat sitting on the other side

Cardboard, felt and screws, and it wears out on purpose

A body of stacked corrugated board, two dark felt plates fixed with plastic screws through the felt into the cardboard, a light felt strip for the camera top; about 800 g, 40 x 33 x 11 cm in the box.

  • A scratcher is a consumableA scratcher is a consumable: the roof frays, then goes through, then it has done its job.
  • Vacuum, lint-roll, never wet itVacuum the shreds, lint-roll the felt, check the screws sit flush, never wet it.

Three rules for choosing

  • Measure her curled up, nose to tail base. Under about 35 cm she curls inside; over that she uses the roof, and The Cottage is the bigger house. At 24 cm high she lies inside rather than sits up, which is how a cat uses a den anyway.

  • One cat. The house is 39.5 cm wide. Two cats use it as a den and a roof, one each, and in a multi-cat house the rule is still one hiding place per cat plus one.

  • Kittens and old cats: a kitten grows into it rather than out of it, and a round door with a low sill suits an old cat, but an old cat who has stopped scratching or stopped stretching up is a vet visit before she is a new scratcher; the change is how sore joints show.

How to

How to put it together, where to put it, and how to keep it tidy

  • Illustrated man kneeling with his hands on the Catfluencer Cave, pressing the dark grey felt plate onto the cardboard body, a cat sitting beside it

Put it together on the floor

Fit the felt plates to the body and drive every plastic screw through the felt into the cardboard until it sits flush; run a hand over each one, because a proud screw is what a claw catches on.

  • Illustrated cat with her front paws on the roof of the Catfluencer Cave, set on the floor beside a cream armchair

Put it where she scratches now

Beside the sofa arm or on the rug she uses, door facing the room, back to a wall. A scratcher in the hall replaces nothing.

  • Illustrated man kneeling and dragging a feather wand across the corrugated roof of the Catfluencer Cave while a cat sits watching

    Show her the roof once

Drag a wand across the top, or scratch it with your own nails while she watches; a cat copies a scratch. Do not put her inside.

  • Illustrated cat stretched out scratching the corrugated roof of the Catfluencer Cave, a man kneeling beside it watching

    Give it two weeks

Most cats take the roof first and the den later. If she has not touched it in two weeks, move it closer to the thing she scratches instead.

  • Illustrated man kneeling with a handheld vacuum at the foot of the Catfluencer Cave, shreds on the roof and the floor, a lint roller beside it and a cat sitting on the other side

    Vacuum weekly, screws monthly

Shreds on the floor are the roof working. Vacuum them, lint-roll the felt, and check the screws are still tight after she has been landing on it.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

Cardboard sheds, and a cat who eats the shreds rather than making them should lose the scratcher and have the habit mentioned to your vet, because eating things that are not food has causes. Check the screws sit flush after assembly and monthly; a proud or loose screw catches a claw, and a loose one is small enough to swallow. One cat inside at a time. A cat who stops scratching, stops stretching up, or starts hiding more than she used to is telling you something is wrong: less scratching is one of the quiet signs of sore joints, and more hiding is how cats show pain and illness; both are a vet visit before they are new furniture. It is not for rabbits, which eat cardboard and felt. In a multi-cat house, one hiding place per cat plus one, and a scratcher each. If you are unsure about any of this, ask your vet.

Why I designed it

She scratches where she slept. So the roof is the scratcher.

Watch a cat wake up: she stretches, then scratches the nearest thing, because scratching is the stretch and the scent mark in one, and it happens beside the bed, not across the room.

  • Why the sofa arm gets itThat is why the sofa arm gets it and the post in the hall does not.
  • The scratcher on the roofThe Catfluencer puts the scratcher on the roof of her own den: flat corrugated cardboard, the material most cats choose when given the choice.
  • Underneath, a box for one catUnderneath, one round door and a box the size of one cat.
  • It is a cameraIt is a camera because she was going to be photographed in it anyway.
  • Gary scratches the roof firstGary scratches the roof first thing and then gets in.

    • Quality construction maintains visual appeal despite daily cat activity and interaction. The fun design doesn't compromise on behavioral functionality whatsoever.

    • I bought this as a joke gift to myself for being too online, and it's genuinely become my cat's primary habitat. The camera silhouette shape is brilliant — the viewfinder opening becomes a perfect cat face frame, and the body of the camera is a cosy enclosed sleeping space. My cat peers out of the viewfinder with such regal judgment that it feels fitting. The felt quality is exceptional — dense and well-structured with no collapsing. It photographs beautifully from every angle (naturally). My Instagram followers are obsessed. PURRZ's ability to be genuinely witty while delivering genuine quality is something very few brands manage.

How big is it, really, and will she fit?

It is 39.5 x 28.5 x 24 cm. Measure her curled up, nose to tail base: under about 35 cm she fits the den. It is a house for one cat; two cats use it as a den and a roof.

Is the roof really a scratcher?

Yes. The body is stacked corrugated cardboard with the flute edges up, which is the surface of every flat cardboard scratcher, and the roof is the part she reaches first when she comes out of the den. It is flat, so it suits the cat who scratches the rug or the carpet rather than the sofa arm; a cat who stretches up the sofa arm wants a post as well, and the roof will still get used.

    How long will it last?

As long as a cardboard scratcher lasts, which depends on the cat: months with a keen scratcher, longer with a lazy one. The roof frays, then goes through, and that is the product working, not failing. The felt plates and the screws outlast the cardboard.

    Is it Small or Medium?

One size exists; you may see it called Small or Medium, and it is the same house. What matters is the measurement: 39.5 x 28.5 x 24 cm, one cat curled under about 35 cm, and a kitten who grows into it rather than out of it.

    How do I clean it?

Vacuum the roof and the shreds round it weekly, run a lint roller over the felt, and use a damp cloth on marks on the felt only. Never wet the cardboard; it swells and the roof goes soft. If she is sick in it, the body is the consumable part, which is the honest answer, and the felt plates wipe clean.

My cat scratches the sofa. Will this stop her?

It helps most when it stands next to the sofa, because she scratches where she is, not where the scratcher is. A flat cardboard roof is what a rug scratcher wants; a cat who stretches up the sofa arm also wants something vertical, and the Scratch Me Happy post beside this box covers both. Trim her claws every couple of weeks and the sofa recovers faster than you expect.

What if it arrives damaged or a screw is loose?

Email hello@purrz.com within 7 days of delivery with a photo and your order number; faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. A screw that will not tighten is a fault, not a feature; do not give it to her until every screw sits flush.
